Abstract: This article relates to the question of the relation between alcoholism and the development of football in Chile between the end of the XIX and the start of the XX Century. Through the check of period documents, speeches, manuals and the press, an analysis is carried out of the context through which this process is developed and the theoretical motives that impelled the elite to assume that this sport might be able to control the tension between an accelerated economical modernization process and a people that, through their own perspectives, wasn't able of handing this challenge, presenting a deep threat to the development of the nation.
