Political Contention and Forms of Violence in the Romanian Principalities (16th–17th Centuries)
I... more Political Contention and Forms of Violence in the Romanian Principalities (16th–17th Centuries) In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Romanian Principalities lacked treatises of political theory or compendia of comments on works of classical philosophy with references to practices of political governance. For this reason, people’s perceptions of political contention and its outcomes can only be reconstructed starting from the odd allusion and comment scattered in the period’s written sources. In the Romanian Principalities the deposition of princes through violence was not routine practice, but the extreme solution to a political deadlock. Recourse to this form of violence can be explained by the lack of a clear, immutable system of succession. At the same time, the small number of princely assassinations must be connected to a conception of the monarch’s body as having a mystical dimension, as being sacred, immortal and intangible. If we attempt to construct a typology of the protesters, the first thing we notice is that the initiators and leaders of the protest movements were always members of the noble class (boyars). On the one hand, as members of the country’s political apparatus, the boyars had all the inside information and could identify correctly the right moment for an intervention. Their uprisings invariably took place in politically unstable moments and as such they are reliable indicators of major crises. On the other hand, as wealthy property-owners, only the boyars had the resources needed for sending envoys, for travelling inside and outside the country’s borders, and for assembling and maintaining armies. The pressure groups were not formed randomly, but more often than not relied on alliances founded on kinship, intermarriage or ritual. Such a group needed a leader – an individual who took the initiative and had the means of attracting like-minded malcontents. Participation in political contention was a major risk, which the participants acknowledged and accepted. Therefore, the links between leader and associates had to rely on discretion, trust and mutual loyalty (in some cases sealed by a binding oath). Some expressions of violence were considered legitimate and, as such, were tolerated by society; however, excessive violence – i.e. non-legitimate violence – was denounced and penalized. Violence against the ruling prince, irrespective of the causes, was not condoned and, when it happened, had to be justified and defended in the eyes of contemporaries and posterity alike through a discourse which presented the slain monarch as having departed from the model of the ideal sovereign and as having failed to fulfil his duties to the subjects. A prince’s assassination was a way of eliminating an unjust tyrant, thereby also removing the principles, norms and values he promoted. Even though most sources do not indicate the deeper causes of contention, it is likely that rather than being random acts of insubordination, such movements were the outcome of real, serious and deep-seated grievances, with solid ideological foundations.

The Whiteley Galleries, case 9, no 144-1865).

In the past, the colour had a very important role. The way it was displayed, seen and used was not accidental, but related to imaginary, ideology and the forms of non-verbal communication. The colour was everywhere: in clothes, in princely and noble residences, in modest houses or in monastic cells, in harnesses, in carriages, in arms, in jewels, in insignia of power, in coat of arms, in flags, in prince treasure, in military uniforms, in churches, in food and drink, etc. The colour was a decorative element, a mark of wealth and prestige, a symbol of power and an expression of piety. The author is careful to draw attention to the difficulties encountered by the researcher interested in the history of colours. The colour introduces the historian to the realm of symbols. Along with animals, stones or plants, the colours are a proof of the semantic richness of the past. Whether we find it in text, image or objects, colour has multiple meanings, sometimes quite contradictory according to our logic. For this reason, each colour must be placed and analysed in its own context; then the different contexts will be studied by comparison. Only in this way, the medieval and the pre-modern chromatic polysemy can be decrypted, and the different meanings of colour can be placed in a system of significance.

A Garden of Roses. Women from the Romanian Principalities and Transylvania, 17th-19th C
This book... more A Garden of Roses. Women from the Romanian Principalities and Transylvania, 17th-19th C This book was born out of the authors’ wish to explore one particular type of social experience in the Romanian Principalities and Transylvania of the old regime: women’s experience. Apart from capturing often fascinating biographical details about better- or lesser-known individual female figures, the life narratives included in this volume are also meant to be alternative pathways into the understanding of old-regime Romania via the roles played by women. Whether one looks at the domestic space or at aspects of economic, political, religious and cultural life, women are found to be active either as protagonists or in minor, anonymous roles from the early modern period to the nineteenth century and beyond. Despite the relative scarcity of documentary sources in the three provinces and the comparative absence of female literary characters or of first-person female voices, occasionally a woman’s profile will stand out. Using life narratives and collective portraits as formats, we have put together a ‘bouquet’ of women’s biographies, showcased against the backdrop of sociopolitical and cultural developments in the two Romanian provinces and Transylvania. The ‘bouquet’ is a reference to the title of this volume, A Garden of Roses, inspired by an anthology of writings by the visionary Saint Marguerite-Maria Alacoque (1647–1690) (Jó illatú Rózsás Kert, A Rose Garden Most Fragrant). It was translated into Hungarian by the Countess Sigray Erzsébet Róza in 1703 in Vienna and published in Bratislava in 1712 with the support of the Transylvanian Count Samuel Kálnoky and his daughter Hedvig. It is not so much the delicate beauty of the roses that lies behind the choice of title, but the metaphorical suggestions of the garden as a liminal area between the intimacy of the home and the openness of the public space.
The history of colors – chromophile and chromophobic intersections
The connotations we can associ... more The history of colors – chromophile and chromophobic intersections The connotations we can associate with the idea of color are multiple and come from different disciplinary areas. On a strictly biological level, color derives from the possibility of the human eye to perceive one or more frequencies (wavelengths) of light. For the historian, as for the sociologist or anthropologist, the color is, first of all, defined as a fact of society, capable of highlighting matters of a symbolic, ideological, socio-political, and cultural nature. Color is a language in itself, assuming differences according to the age, the investigated cultural space and the social category that uses it for a particular purpose at a given time. The relationship between body and color reveals a whole worldview, as color perception is profoundly influenced by how we decipher our own epidermis. The choice of colors also depends on the way in which the different societies have modulated them through language. Terminologies are often poor and raise problems when the need to translate a text into another language arises. Under these methodological principles, the Faculty of History of the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iaşi and the Faculty of Letters of the University of Bucharest organized, on 25 of November 2017, in Iaşi, the interdisciplinary Conference The history of colors – chromophile and chromophobic intersections. The program included 16 papers, of which 14 were read, and in this issue of the “Scientific Annals of the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi” (new series) 12 are published.

Surrounded more and more by machinery and lifeless objects, and living in sophisticated concrete, metal, and glass structures, the people nowadays seem to start remembering the life in the natural environment and their fellow beings of olden times. The growth of the pets’ number, usage of animals for therapeutic purposes, increase of the publications dedicated to them, feature films, documentaries, television and radio programmes, cartoons, novels, posters, figurines, toys, and knickknacks confirm the fact that the affective space of the animals becomes larger and larger and more spacious. Threatened to lose our own identity we try to find it again with the help and through animals, real or imaginary. In today’s Romanian research on the Middle Ages the inter-disciplinary approach is practised occasionally and rather rarely. The relationship of geography, theology, philosophy, law, economical sciences, ethnology, and history of literature, art, architecture, music or medicine, with biology, chemistry, and physics are either non-existent or rather weak. The way reconstruction of the past is looked upon today urges not to limit the perspective, but to enlarge it. Looking only from one direction, a bi-dimensional image is seen; the relief, depth, proportions are given only by the images taken from different angles and by the comparisons to the neighbouring realities. The model comes from the French historiography, more exactly from the series of books published in the collection of “Cahiers du Léopard d’Or”, in which a subject of common interest is treated with various conceptual methods, regulations and tools, by experts with various training, focuses and sensitivities, this common effort always generating a complex and unitary image in its diversity, much closer to the way the reflected reality must have looked like. These findings and this model generated the idea to organise in Iaşi city (in 2009 and 2010) two inter-disciplinary colloquies dedicated to the place, meaning and importance of animals in the life of the people of olden times in the Romanian territory. The present book is the expression of this new type of tackling the Romanian past.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Romanian Principalities lacked treatises of political theory or compendia of comments on works of classical philosophy with references to practices of political governance.
The author uses different historical sources for reconstructing the chromatic universe of Moldavia and Wallachia, in the Middle Ages and the pre-modern era.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Romanian Principalities lacked treatises of political theory or compendia of comments on works of classical philosophy with references to practices of political governance.
The author uses different historical sources for reconstructing the chromatic universe of Moldavia and Wallachia, in the Middle Ages and the pre-modern era.
This book was born out of the authors’ wish to explore one particular type of social experience in the Romanian Principalities and Transylvania of the old regime: women’s experience. The ‘bouquet’
is a reference to the title of this volume, A Garden of Roses, inspired by an anthology of writings by the visionary Saint Marguerite-Maria Alacoque (1647–1690) (Jó illatú Rózsás Kert, A Rose Garden Most Fragrant).
The connotations we can associate with the idea of color are multiple and come from different disciplinary areas. On a strictly biological level, color derives from the possibility of the human eye to perceive one or more frequencies (wavelengths) of light. For the historian, as for the sociologist or anthropologist, the color is, first of all, defined as a fact
of society, capable of highlighting matters of a symbolic, ideological, socio-political, and cultural nature.
Surrounded more and more by machinery and lifeless objects, and living in sophisticated concrete, metal, and glass structures, the people nowadays seem
to start remembering the life in the natural environment and their fellow beings
of olden times. The growth of the pets’ number, usage of animals for therapeutic
purposes, increase of the publications dedicated to them, feature films,
documentaries, television and radio programmes, cartoons, novels, posters,
figurines, toys, and knickknacks confirm the fact that the affective space of the
animals becomes larger and larger and more spacious. Threatened to lose our
own identity we try to find it again with the help and through animals, real or
imaginary.
In today’s Romanian research on the Middle Ages the inter-disciplinary
approach is practised occasionally and rather rarely. The relationship of
geography, theology, philosophy, law, economical sciences, ethnology, and
history of literature, art, architecture, music or medicine, with biology,
chemistry, and physics are either non-existent or rather weak. The way
reconstruction of the past is looked upon today urges not to limit the perspective,
but to enlarge it. Looking only from one direction, a bi-dimensional image is
seen; the relief, depth, proportions are given only by the images taken from
different angles and by the comparisons to the neighbouring realities. The model
comes from the French historiography, more exactly from the series of books
published in the collection of “Cahiers du Léopard d’Or”, in which a subject of
common interest is treated with various conceptual methods, regulations and
tools, by experts with various training, focuses and sensitivities, this common
effort always generating a complex and unitary image in its diversity, much
closer to the way the reflected reality must have looked like. These findings and
this model generated the idea to organise in Iaşi city (in 2009 and 2010) two
inter-disciplinary colloquies dedicated to the place, meaning and importance of
animals in the life of the people of olden times in the Romanian territory. The
present book is the expression of this new type of tackling the Romanian past.
