On the one hand, the students should elaborate a paper on an innovative idea of his or her own and try to refute its originality. On the other hand, a system of 23 measures has been designed to train students in innovative thinking, to broaden their achievements, to evaluate them and to give continuity to their ideas. The application of this method to 457 students appears to have been successful. According to a survey taken by the students (47% rate of return), the method has improved their ability to think innovatively at a high or very high level (21.58%) or at a medium level (43.19%). The method is particularly suitable for nations with few resources. As far as we know, this has not been previously applied or proposed by any other authors.

It also represented an opportunity to mitigate the isolation of the Franco dictatorship, by linking its creation with the 1:1,000,000 international map.Making it involved going over the desert inch by inch, since other means had proved unusable: because Spain's isolation made it impossible to buy film for a photogrammetric flight, because of the distortions caused to theodolites and sights by the atmosphere and light refraction, and because of the mechanical action of dust in topographical instruments. In the desert, particularly harsh in the “hamada” and Tiris areas, the selfless help of the Saharawis was crucial for the achievement of the cartographic project. Through poetic games which precisely depict desert landscapes, they could call on a mental map which was essential both on topographical survey trips and during the office meetings dedicated to the transcription on the map of their placenames and of geographical features generic names.

Political conflicts in the western fringe of the Saharan desert since the second half of the 1950... more Political conflicts in the western fringe of the Saharan desert since the second half of the 1950s have involved actors using competing territorial imaginaries, which disagree on the question of sovereignty and who should hold it. As soon as newly independent Morocco claimed the then Spanish Sahara as part of a 'Greater Morocco', other nationalist projects such as the 'Ensamble Mauritanien', the 'Spanish nation' and the 'Saharawi people', incorporated the colony into their own imagined territories in incompatible ways. All of these geographical visions were justified by different interpretations of the history of the Atlantic Sahara. This article shows the role played by alternative conceptions of this space, and the histories that supported them, during the end of Spanish colonial rule and the beginning of Moroccan control. It also shows how new ideas of state sovereignty and political legitimacy within the regional and international context conditioned the competing territorial conceptions and discouraged any attempt to develop a non-nationalist imagination.

The physiographical characteristics of land and its geological composition have given rise to num... more The physiographical characteristics of land and its geological composition have given rise to numerous toponyms in the different linguistic frameworks that have arisen in Spain. Although the existence of toponyms that describe the characteristics of the land does not seem to require any further explanation, a detailed look into these tends to bring more questions to the fore than certainties. The linguistic evolution of these words, on the one hand, and the changes that the land itself undergoes due to natural causes or because of changes made by farming the land, on the other, can distance the original reason behind a specific toponym from the place it names. Other unknown causes may also affect this link, such as whether these toponyms have been moved from their original location on different maps.
If we pay close attention to the linguistic characteristics of each toponym and the geography of the terrain, it is possible to re-establish these relationships. The aim of the present article is therefore to analyse a series of toponyms and their meanings in the province of Cuenca in relation to the characteristics of the land. We will analyse them from different viewpoints, comparing them with the locations in which they are found elsewhere in Spain. Our study has been carried out as part of a research Project financed by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science (FFI2010).
In what follows, we look at the methodology adopted before giving a brief summary of the linguistic framework of our study and a general description of the characteristics of the terrain in question, before ending with some specific examples.

Abstract
This paper has two parts. The first describes a series of GeoTechnologies applied in different geographical and environmental work for different territorial areas in Spain and northwest Africa. The guiding thread is the author’s personal experience as an example additional to the fields of study and the growing importance of GeoTechnologies in geography. A second part is a theoretical reflection on these changes focusing on the importance, evolution and the constraints that digital earth imply (Google Earth…). The first part was exposed in the corresponding panel of Cieta VI, while the latter correspond to the thoughts and ideas prepared for further discussion.

Abstract
In the geographical discourses of the Sociedad Geográfica de Madrid (renamed the Real Sociedad Geográfica as of 1901), we can find a tangle of circumstances and intentions that reflect how ideas that are a priori antagonistic coexist and complement each other: national identity and supranationalism, protection of borders and geographical alliances, and so on. This situation is reflected in the relations between Spain and Portugal, characterised by the juxtaposition of the establishment of the shared border and the proposal of a political union. We also show that this dichotomy is embodied more in the work of geographers than anywhere else, rife as it is with proposals that stretch from unifying Spain and Portugal (“Iberismo”), via creating a broad union with the Spanish speaking countries of America (“Hispanoamericanismo”), to chartering an alliance of Southern-European countries to oppose those of the North.

Galician) has led to the recovery and regularisation of place names and their different variations in Spain. In contrast, it is often the case that regions in which only Castilian Spanish is spoken, such as Cuenca, there is no corpus or catalogue of toponyms available that is both exhaustive and reliable.
Bearing this in mind, the present study will analyse, from both a linguistic and geographical perspective, a series of toponyms taken from base maps of Spain (National Topographical Map, 1:25,000), with a particular focus on the names of places/geographical areas in relation to the physical characteristics of the terrain. Cuenca has a limestone substrate and an abundance of clay soils, as may be demonstrated by the
toponym charca “small pond”, which refers to the collection of water on a more or less temporary basis that occurs in many different ways in the area in question: charco, chabarco, abanco, tollo, colocha, nava, poza, cenagal, etc. The linguistic analysis of thesynonymic variation of these toponyms and their geographical distribution using a Geographical Information System will allow us to draw a series of conclusions on the use of toponyms in inland Spain.
