However, evidences show that cats have played an important role on human communities through time, holding also an important symbolic meaning. Cats have been used as pets, pest controllers, for its fur, as medicine and sometimes as food. In this contribution we make an overview of the archaeological and iconographic record of cats from medieval and postmediaeval Catalonia (X-XVIII centuries), using published data and also some new (unpublished) studies. The meaning of the cat remains in each site is discussed considering its cultural and chronologic context. In this paper, we present a compilation of these elements, employing data from the literature, as well as data obtained by our own studies. These animal materials consist of tools and ornamental objects. Complete animal burials and partial elements of these animals (especially from domestic species) were also recorded. In general, animal deposits in a funerary context provide an approach to the study of ritual activity and beliefs, especially in agro-pastoral communities where domestic animals are the basic elements of subsistence and the creation of resources. In this case, taxonomic identification indicates the importance of domestic animals due to their role in the economy, as well as their use in food and symbolic offerings and as a manifestation of the power of the dead. By contrast, a taphonomic study indicates the scarcity of wild animal deposits – six birds and two carnivores – and shows the differential use of these species, which are perhaps more closely related to life symbols or totemic symbols.
Natural and worked astragali or knuckle bones dating from the Neolithic are common finds in Euras... more Natural and worked astragali or knuckle bones dating from the Neolithic are common finds in Eurasia and are usually thought to be related with gaming, divination or protection. Knuckle bones/astragali (N = 549) and imitations (N = 11) were found in 27 of the 158 tombs that have been studied in the El Poblado necropolis, Murcia, Southeast Spain (fourth-second century BC), forming one of the most important knuckle bone collections in an Iberian cultural site. The greatest concentrations were found in tombs of important and high-class individuals. Most of the knuckle bones/astragali are from sheep (Ovis aries Linnaeus, 1758) and had been burnt with the corpse of the deceased. The fact that knuckle bones occur as part of the grave goods of both sexes suggests the egalitarian use of these items. While certain modifications point to their probable use, unworked astragali could have symbolised ownership of flocks or been used for exchange. The significance of this item and the data collected are discussed within the social and cultural context of pre-Roman societies in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula.

Faunal remains recovered in these burials a priori inform about the different uses of animals in funerary rituals. Complete and partial anatomical connections, isolated elements, and/or bone fragments were recovered. These may appear directly associated with human remains or scattered among the structures’ fill. Animal remains were analyzed using zooarchaeological and taphonomic methods: anatomical and taxonomical composition, age of death, and human modifications. The data obtained were linked to burial type and human remains’ sex and age. Results show that the economic importance of domestic animals for Middle Neolithic groups would also cover their symbolic and funerary world. In Bòbila Madurell, animals could be offerings and play a part in feasts. In addition, faunal data confirm the ritual diversity and the possible social differentiation of these groups previously proposed by other studies.

An analysis of the stable isotopes δ13C and δ15N in 42 bone samples has made it possible to reconstruct the diet of domestic equids. The results and carpological remains show that the territory was managed for agricultural and pasture use. They indicate the cultivation of two types of highly nutritious and digestible millet, used in combination with other cereals to prepare fodder, as well as the use of natural pastures.

This dataset con- sists of isotopic signatures ( δ13 C and δ15 N) obtained by iso- tope ratio mass spectrometry from the skeletal remains of 42 equines (horse, ass and their hybrids) from the Can Roqueta site (Sabadell, Northeast Iberian Peninsula). Their chronology spans from Late Bronze Age to Late Roman Period, with par- ticular emphasis on the Early Iron Age. These animals were found in storage silos and graves and were probably sac- rificed as ritual offerings. The isotopic values are accompa- nied by data to assess the quality of the collagen analyzed. This fills a gap in equine isotopic values for this region and chronology, which may be of use to archaeologists interested in the study of livestock management or palaeodiet.

These dogs were deposited in burial and ceremonial structures in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Neolithic, within the Pit Grave cultural horizon (ca. 4200–3600 cal BC). Four archaeological sites of the Catalonian coastal strip are studied: Camí de Can Grau, La Serreta, Ca l'Arnella, and Bòbila Madurell (one of the most important necropolises of the Iberian Peninsula). The presence of these dogs is interpreted as evidence of accompanying offerings and represents the most ancient use of this animal in the context of burials within the studied territory. Although it is a not a globally recorded gesture during this period, in light of the present results, it can be considered as a stereotyped ritual activity and evidence of the close relationship between these animals and the human communities. The diet of most of the dogs must be considered mixed and very similar to that of the humans, including consumption of herbivores and terrestrial plants.

Within the Pleisto-cene record, felids (Felidae) are not frequent, but almost all possible species are present: the cave lion (Panthera spelaea), the leopard (Panthera pardus), the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) and the wildcat (Felis silvestris). Only the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) has not yet been identified. The findings are the result both of modern-day and ancient excavations, as well as chance occurrences. The Iberian lynx is the felid that has interacted most with humans and is the only one whose remains are, in certain cases, of a definitely anthropic origin, corresponding to the whole of the Upper Palaeolithic. An anthropic origin in the Upper Palaeolithic might also occasionally apply to the wildcat. By contrast, the large-sized felids such as cave lions and leopards are represented by very few remains, which are non-anthropic in origin.

We present the skeletal remains study of more than fifty animals registered in the courtyard of t... more We present the skeletal remains study of more than fifty animals registered in the courtyard of the “Casas del Turuñuelo” building. Taphonomic marks have been relevant in the interpretation of a mass sacrifice where adult equids predominate. This unique building was intentionally buried under tons of sediments at the end of the 5th century BC (Celestino and Rodríguez González 2019).
On the pavement of the courtyard, isolated bones and whole skeletons indicate different phases of accumulation, which are relatively consecutive in time. In a first phase and clearly differentiated in the SE courtyard quadrant, the remains of nine equids and one dog had kept exposed to the environmental conditions and not immediately covered by sediments. This temporal exposure have allowed the scavengers access to the corpses, according to the bone dispersion and the taphonomic marks observed.
In a second phase, mostly complete skeletons of equids, bovines and pigs were deposited in other areas, covering a significative extension of the courtyard. These deposits should have been buried in a short space of time due to the scarcity of postdepositional alterations and the general evidence of anatomical connections. The results of the microstratigraphic analysis through soil micromorphology verify the “in situ” decomposition of the animals in anatomical connection, since their sedimentary matrix shows a significant concentration of authigenic phosphate nodules.
Skeletons superposition and their postures display a deliberate anthropic intervention to create a specific visible scenography that gives a predominant importance to equids. The general absence of fractures and cut marks on the isolated remains does not reveal a human consumption of soft tissues. Similar conclusion can be obtained from the entire carcasses analysis usually found in anatomical connection. Nevertheless, thermo-alteration signals verify a fire exposure in some isolated specimens.

Tooth wear observed on the molar teeth suggested a grain-rich diet. Several pathological conditions found on limb- and skull-bones can be associated with both lifestyle and feeding habits. Now we present new data obtained from the study of a complete horse skeleton recovered from this site, which show important exostosis in the scapular girdle and in the forelimb bones as well as in the last torathic and firsts lumbar vertebrae. These pathologies are indicative of a muscular stress caused by a continuous effort. Macroscopic examination of bone lesions undertaken from an equine veterinarian point of view indicates that this horse was used until a very old age in order to maximize its exploitation. This is clear evidence for the importance of horses in the economy of the early Iron Age in the Iberian Peninsula.

The presence of animal remains in the form of singular
deposits and/or offerings in necropolis as well as in towns
is a very usual fact in Catalonia during the Iron Age. The
inherent complexity of the study on the animal role at the
core of human societies pushes us beyond what’s strictly
the economical field and makes us taking into account
aspects as, for instance, the collective imaginary, the social
complexity, the symbolic codes, the believes, the import
of new traditions and the affective relationships, fruit of
their interaction with people. For this reason, the study
of these singular practises and/or ritual patterns is an
important contribution in the analysis of the construction
and the evolution of the regional and/or local identity
of a society. The symbols are the ones to help us when
establishing the borders between territories and towns,
the ones that allow the distinctness for ethnic groups,
social status or genders. Symbols that are many times
exemplified based on certain animals. And depending
on the physical, ethological and ecological characteristics
of these animals they will end up becoming totems or
elements of prestige. Symbols that, through the sacrifice
and the offering, perpetuate the collective imaginary in
life and in death of a community.
This paper wants to offer a territorial radiography of the
content, selection, context and location of the different
deposits with animal offerings. All of this by analysing
the regional particularities, the evolution of the above
mentioned practises and their sociocultural implications
from the end of the Bronze to the Iberian Age in Catalonia.
The results are obtained from integrated studies of faunal
remains in various sites of the Iron Age in Catalonia. The
most important are the Iberian settlement of Ca n’Oliver
and the Early Iron Age settlement of Can Roqueta, in the
pre-littoral depression, and the Iberian settlement of
Vilars in the western plain.
The most representative bone assemblages of ritual
practices are studied.

The site of Can Roqueta is located in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula (Vallès Occidental, Barcelona). It has been the object of ongoing archaeological activity since 1990, providing a record of human settlement from the Neolithic to the medieval period.
The research undertaken for this thesis focuses on the use of animals in ritual deposits during the Early Bronze Age (2.000-1.450 cal BC) through an analysis of the faunal remains recovered from the internal structures carved in the clay. The settlement of the Early Bronze Age is composed of small groups of pits and silos, as well as funerary structures.
The objectives of the paper are to contribute to a better understanding of both cultural and economic aspects of life and death in these populations in Catalonia, including subsistence strategies and ritual ceremonies. Furthermore, by comparing the materials analyzed with those from other sites, the research aims to show that animal sacrifice is a universal response to death, with slight differences that probably reflect cultural and social adjustments.
The results of this research show that children, women and men were buried together in a very similar ceremony and accompanied by animals deposited within the same mortuary
structures, as well as in ritual pits nearby. Sheep and goats, cows, pigs and dogs are the best-represented species, although foxes and birds are also documented. While many of these animals were offered as a meal to accompany the deceased on his journey, the dogs, which were not consumed, were probably sacrificed as guides of the soul.
