ABSTRACT: This article is inspired in a recent reflection on the experience of precarity as living conditions and basis for collective organization. From a collaborative ethnographic research in progress with the Confederación de Trabajadores de la Economía Popular (CTEP), I focus on the public spaces workers practices analyzing the process of political construction hold by this organization as a dispute over the forms of redistribution of wealth. Drawing on this experience in which the popular economy became a claiming category related to the demand of recognition of this sector as workers with full rights. I analyze how in this case the process of building rights is held as an affirmation of public space as a resource in dispute that involves a collective struggle for the welfare for themselves and to others. I argue that in this process, are projected and imagined notions of welfare that at the same time draws on and contest social senses and historically built around salaried work.

This article discusses ethnographic research conducted on ‘recovered factories’ in Buenos Aires between 2002 and 2005 (the period in which most cases were registered). The study of workers’ everyday practices showed changes both in the timing of, and in the activities included in, the working day. As a result, the workplace had become a “site of struggle” and, at the same time, the actions that constituted ‘the struggle’ were organized and signified as part of the “workplace”. Drawing on the example of a specific case study, this article analyzes how productive activities were articulated as protest actions, and suggests that the company’s recovery turned into a political action that was anchored in work. I discuss the implications of these articulations of “work” and “struggle” in the (re)definition of the relations between the workers.

I discuss the implications of these articulations of “work” and “struggle” in the (re)definition of the relations between the workers.

as trabajadores/as de la economía popular.
de trabajadores/as y unidades productivas.
