We argue that historians are challenging several assumptions of the business group literature in two ways: expanding the temporal and geographical boundaries of business groups and producing sound empirical evidence on the long-term dynamics and flexibility of business groups in different institutional contexts. Finally, we outline a research agenda aimed at increasing the impact of historical research on business group scholarship.

Many examples of business groups can be found during the first global economy, in different geographic settings, from Japanese zaibatsu and Indian business groups to Latin American grupos economicos and British trading companies operating in Asia, Latin America and Africa, which started to diversify their business in the 1870s.

This essay contains a brief summary of the business history’s historiography of Latin America, as well as the challenges for future research agenda. Applying social network analysis, it seeks to clarify how business groups can contribute to the cohesion of a corporate network structure, through their ability to create links among firms not only within their boundaries but also external to them. The article contributes to both corporate network and business groups' literature, highlighting a role of business groups that extant literature has failed to identify as relevant.
