RIOS URBANOS: NUEVAS PERSPECTIVAS PARA EL ESTUDIO, DISEÑO Y GESTIÓN DE LOS TERRITORIOS FLUVIALES (La Plata), 2017

PROMENADE RIBEREÑA-ESPACIO PÚBLICO-PAISAJE FLUVIAL ABSTRACT The Mapocho River is one of the most significant geographic landmarks within the city of Santiago, and its gravitational condition within the urban landscape's formation is a challenge that goes back to its foundation. Its riverbanks have been subject of several interventions over the course of the years, giving birth to the first urban promenades and parks that followed the containment of the river course in close relationship between infrastructure, landscape and public space. However, with the growth of the city, this riparian space was relegated to a fragmented and residual condition, uprooted from the urban experience, and tied under the mobility and transportation criteria.

Its potential in the urban and landscape conformation of the city is a challenge that goes back to the foundation
of the city. This unique condition - not without difficulties – has made
it the subject of diverse studies and projects throughout time, that not necessarily has been translated into the physical space.
This research was born in the School of Architecture of the Universidad Católica de Chile, during an academic experience with undergraduate students, and It gave rise to an applied research developed for an interdisciplinary team of UC professors, becoming a concrete proposal for the city. The developed approach of the project named “Mapocho 42K”, poses to recover the potentiality the Mapocho river banks offer as a unique public space of metropolitan scale of 42k, acting as an east – west oriented backbone with a special tendency of continuity that allows to connect eight municipalities with different social and topography conditions where the river runs across the city.
The main effort during the strategic plan and project development, was put on sustaining the condition of collective project, where the architect role as an assembler of the diverse actors is instrumental in its attainment, anchored to a strong proposal that represent and identify them all.

Using vernacular techniques, this work could be linked to the School of Valparaiso travesia works. Raised in a distant spot in the Amazon rainforest, they are light, hand-made structures with a small footprint, covered with a leaf-woven membrane. They are the result of cultural exchanges between Chilean architects and the Shipiba people.

With the garden city as their model, some Santiago neighborhoods have taken the garden as a key to the urban puzzle, as mediator with the street, private expansion within the block, link with the landscape of the valley, and regulator for neighbors’ relationships. New vocations arise as these open un-programmed domestic spaces are incorporated into the collective sphere, integrated through actions that create a whole, yet take account of each part.
