This is a monographic analysis of Velimir Khlebnikov’s poem, which exists in several versions and goes by the titles “The Lay of El'” or simply “El'.” The citation index of the earliest version created in Kharkov in 1920 and titled “The Lay of El'” is exceptionally high, and among those who have commented on it were outstanding Khlebnikov scholars. However, a comprehensive academic reading of the poem is yet to be proposed, and the article aims to bridge that gap. It delves into and explores the conflict between the poem’s “Cratylic” discourse (in the sense of Gérard Genette’s monograph Mimologics: Voyage en Cratylie) and bad writing, meticulously classifying all instances of the latter. Additionally, the article tackles a theoretical problem by discussing how commentators should approach avant-garde poems like “The Lay of El'”: disregard bad writing, as has been done before, or, on the contrary, provide its comprehensive analysis. A separate section of the article is about the poem’s love discourse as a borrowing from the Silver Age.

The article «Inside the Mountain Idles... the Subtext? Figuring out Mandel'shtam's Idol» is an attempt to decipher one of Osip Mandel'shtam's most enigmatic poems. As a point of departure, it hypothetically states that the poem "Inside the Mountain Idles an Idol" deals with the sacredness of an autocrat inherent in Ancient Egyptian, Babylonian, as well as Russian/Soviet history. The poem's imagery, its diction, wording, plot and, last but not least, whimsical intertextual matryoshka-like nesting pattern are all means of undermining this kind of idolatry. The generalized idol is portrayed as a ghastly old creature who has outlived his age and is decaying. To name a few of the most powerful subtexts, the Old Man of Crete from The Divine Comedy, King Nebuchadnezzar's gold idol from The Book of Daniel, Alexander Pushkin's Bronze Horseman, not to mention Ramses the Great's rock "Abu Simbel" temple, highlight the idol's nature, which is that of a ruler worshipped as god. Buddhist associations, so far the main point in the critical discussion of "Inside the Mountain Idles an Idol", relevant as they are, should be seen as helping embody the ruler-god theme.

This article is a close reading of Osip Mandel'shtam's enigmatic quatrain (1933, 1935) about the Italian language. Brief as it is, it boasts variation on several traditional topoi at once. Two among them are: disputes about the nature of the literary Italian language (for Mandel'shtam Italian sounded sometimes feminine, sometimes childish) and the issue of it having been shaped by its founders, namely Petrarch, Ariosto and Tasso. The miniature poem is lavishly decorated with the key-words pearl and friend involving Russian-Italian associations and also harbors a rich gastronomic metaphor: relishing Italian phonetics like an oyster. The paper shows the poem to be a consummate gem in the widespread genre of Russian Italophile verse.
Key words: Mandel'shtam, philological poetry, close reading of a text, the grammar of poetry, intertextuality, Petrarch, Ariosto, Tasso, Lomonosov, Batiushkov, Pushkin, Russian Italophilia, debates on the gender of different languages, pearl topos, oyster topos, friendship motif

This article, part of a larger study of Osip Mandelshtam’s interest in Italian poetry, develops a new approach to his translations of Petrarch’s sonnets. Comparing Petrarch’s rhetoric, poetics and intertextual background of sonnet 164 (“Or che ’l ciel et la terra e ’l vento tace…”) to that of Mandelshtam’s translation (“Kogda usnet zemlia i zhar otpyshet…”), the author concludes that fidelity to the original was not Mandelshtam’s main strategy. The Russian poet rewrote Petrarch’s text in his own mode, following his own logic. In sonnet 164, Mandelshtam’s conceit was to emphasize his affinity to Petrarch in creating “philological” poetry with a strong intertextual component.

Ital’ianias’, ruseia: Dante i Petrarka v khudozhestvennom diskurse Serebrianogo veka ot simvolistov do Mandel’shtama (Going Italian, Going Russian: Dante and Petrarch in Silver Age Letters from the Symbolists to Mandel’shtam) takes its name from a famous line by Osip Mandel’shtam, and Mandel’shtam is in fact its central figure. The first part of the monograph explores the Russian Petrarchism which boomed during the Silver Age, the second is a close analysis of poems by Innokentii Annenskii, Mikhail Kuzmin, Vladislav Khodasevich and Anna Akhmatova written in the shadow of the Dante-Petrarch tradition, while the third and last part focuses exclusively on Mandel’shtam. It explores his journey from a complete lack of interest in the two Italian classics (who, in his mind, were a part of the Russian Symbolist canon, and, thus, not his cup of tea) to admiration and the reworking of their heritage into something qualitatively new. The chapter sheds light on all of Mandel’shtam’s references to New Life, Divine Comedy and Canzoniere, including previously unnoted ones.

An Imaginary Orphanhood: Velimir Khlebnikov and Daniil Kharms in the Context of Russian and European Modernism (1st. ed. 2017, 2nd ed. 2018) by Lada Panova takes a new and revisionist look at the Russian avant-garde. It examines the literary works, manifestoes and life-as-art practices of Velimir Khlebnikov, Daniil Kharms and other avant-garde authors, countering various critical myths about the avant-garde (including its own), especially the notion that the movement arose ex nihilo, totally rejecting all authority or precedent and “writing from a clean slate.”
An Imaginary Orphanhood offers provocative readings of the most celebrated works by Khlebnikov (“Incantation by Laughter,” The World in Reverse, “Ka,” Zangezi, etc.) and of Kharms’ much discussed play Paw. In each case, analysis begins with an overview of accepted interpretations; goes on to contextualize the work by examining relevant intellectual fashions, cults and patterns of the epoch that came into play; and ends up offering some unexpected conclusions.
Among other things, this reexamination of Khlebnikov and Kharms’ works reveals the authors’ rich pre-avant-garde literary pedigrees. The demythologization of the “orphanhood” proclaimed by the first avant-gardists culminates in a discussion of Khlebnikov and Kharms’ programmatic gestures of rupture with tradition, such as the well-known call to throw Pushkin and the classics off the steamboat of modernity. These gestures aimed at deemphasizing the writers’ links to their predecessors and focused readers’ attention instead on their own grandiose selves. In reality, both Khlebnikov and Kharms emerge, unwittingly, as true sons of modernism who shared its intellectual concerns, as well as its strategies for self-advertising and for making art out of life (zhiznetvorchestvo).
The modernist manner of avant-garde thinking is also demonstrated in a section dedicated to the numerological topos in Russian literature. Khlebnikov reworked the modernist numerological repertoire, generating self-promotional mythemes and laying claim to such titles as “King of Time” and Founder of the universal “star language.” These in turn provoked lively responses from Oberiu and other modernists, including Mikhail Kuzmin, Evgenii Zamiatin, Veniamin Kaverin and Osip Mandel’shtam.
An Imaginary Orphanhood targets specialists in Russian modernism and Russian avant-garde, as well as a wider readership interested in Russian literature.

"The Case" was written as a semi-documentary, semi-fictional account of the 1891 trial of Aleksandr Bartenev (in the story renamed Alexander Elagin), accused of murdering Maria Wisnowska (renamed Maria Sosnovskaia). This paper is an attempt to distinguish between its fictional and non-fictional components by showing how "The Case" fuses real facts with various ready-made sub-plots taken from Russian and French literature. What is more, intertextual analysis of these fictional episodes reveals the implicit message of the novella.
Several months before his death Bunin inscribed the following enigmatic words on a copy of "The Case" published decades before: "This whole story is a very ugly story." The paper is an attempt to understand what is so “ugly” about this novella. The answer is sought by contextualizing "The Case" within Bunin’s poetic world and within the intellectual context of the Silver Age. "The Case" emerges as the author’s masterful commentary on traditional and modern themes involving mimetic desire and post-Pushkinian “Cleopatromania.” Bunin subjects the worship of a femme fatale, so pervasive in the Silver Age, to radical subversion.
The Künstlerromans under discussion are those by Boris Zaitsev, Ivan Bunin, Vladimir Nabokov and Aleksandr Kuprin, all of whom belonged to the gentry but reinvented themselves as "artists"; and also by the commoners Ivan Shmelev and Gaito Gazdanov. The canon's masterplot features a homo artistocraticus who is generously endowed with the author's life experience and aesthetic quest.
The émigré Künstlerroman can be interpreted as a farewell to the Russian aristocracy crushed by the Bolshevik coup and as a nostalgic record of the prerevolutionary order. In fact, it was meant to capture the birth of an artist from the trauma of the Russian gentry's demise and to claim that aristocratic writing and traditional values, banished from Soviet metropolia, were being preserved by the Russian diaspora.
In sociological terms, the Künstlerroman appears to be a test case for intricate navigation among a "transnational" triangle of influences. Evolving from the Russian aristocratic Bildungsroman under the impact of the modernist European Künstlerroman, the budding Russian émigré Künstlerroman distanced itself from Soviet Socialist-Realist coming-of-age novels. While the latter, written in a simplistically didactic manner, set the new futuristic species of homo sovieticus as a role model for the metropolitan readership, the Künstlerroman opposed to it its own exemplary protagonist: a homo aristocraticus et artisticus. Thus, it reflected the break-up of Russian literature into metropolitan and diasporic fields and met some of the challenges of European modernism.
Avant-garde pragmatics, in a form of a contract with a reader, has preprogrammed a co-opted approach of the mainstream avant-garde scholarship. According to this contract, directed at a group audience, rather than an individual reader, the author creates a radically new type of literature, providing an innovative perspective. Thus, it promotes the writer as a prophetic genius, while demanding abeyance and worship from the reader, offering him/her a type of masochistic pleasure. Mainstream avant-garde scholarship, in its turn, certifies the avant-garde’s claims as its essence and markets its product as exceptional.
Opposed to this co-opted is a nonco-opted reading, usually suppressed or silenced. These market pressures create a dilemma for contemporary avant-garde scholars. Choosing the co-opted reading elevates further the rating of the avant-garde, avant-garde studies and the scholar’s own work, but means engaging in mythmaking, whereas choosing a non-coopted reading reduces the value of the avant-garde and the scholar, generating accusations by mainstream critics of a non-scholarly attitude toward the subject.
