Joyce A Adams
I have worked in the clinical field of child abuse evaluation, diagnosis and treatment for over 40 years. I received my medical degree (MD) at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, graduating in 1977. After 1 year as an intern in Pediatrics there, I transferred to Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center in New York City, where I completed residency training in Social Pediatrics. I was on the faculty of the University of Kansas School of Medicine for 5 years, affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco for 6 years, on faculty at the University of California, San Diego for 19 years, and affiliated with the California Clinical Forensic Medical Training Center in Sacramento, California for 5 years. My focus in academic medicine has been in two areas: Adolescent Medicine and Child Abuse Pediatrics. I retired from clinical practice in 2014, but remain active as a consultant, expert case reviewer in legal cases, reviewer for medical journals, lecturer, and member of professional societies. From 2014 to 2021, I was a consultant for the Pediatric Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner training courses through the California Clinical Forensic Medical Training Center in Sacramento, California. I regularly review manuscripts for publication in Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, Child Abuse and Neglect, the International Journal, and Forensic Science International. Along with other colleagues, I developed and have updated as recently as 2023, a list of medical examination findings that are thought to be normal, caused by conditions other than sexual contact, or are likely due to sexual contact. The list is sometimes referred to as "The Adams Classification Scale". I still review cases for other clinicians who have questions about a particular medical finding, and offer an opinion as to whether or not the finding might be due to sexual abuse or some other cause, and lecture at conferences when invited. I have been a member of the Ray Helfer Society for over 20 years. This group of clinicians presents a yearly conference on topics in the evaluation and treatment of children who may have been physically or sexually abused. I have given many presentations on the evaluation of suspected child sexual abuse at a conference in San Diego California (The San Diego International Conference on Child Maltreatment) that has been hosted there for over 30 years.
