France accounted for Rodó, "the virtuality of Latin genius". His perception of the participants in the conflict nations provoked a reaction from the German community of Montevideo. Assimilating "fairness" to "indifference" Rodó condemned the latter possibility and wrote without hesitation in favor of the cause of France and the allies.

For some, the Marian pilgrimages were acts of faith and expressions of resistance. For other, they constituted manifestations of fanaticism or anachronistic gestures. The hill of Verdún, 120 km from Montevideo, was not a place of apparitions or traditional devotions. However the image of Mary attracted many believers who sought to reaffirm the role of the Church in the birth of the nation and the Catholic identity of Uruguayan society. Rejected or venerated, Our Lady of Verdún motivated attitudes of violence or relief, and became the symbol of society without religion or Christian homeland, as well as the projects of each of the proposals involved.

He became a reference for young Uruguayan Catholics gathered in the Catholic Club (1875), led the foundation of the first Free or Catholic University (1878) and the Catholic Circle of Workers of Montevideo (1885). Close to Leo XIII, he was part of the group of clergymen who “recreated” the relations between Rome and Latin America. Third Bishop (1890-1897) and first Archbishop of Montevideo (since 1897), he developed a great activity as a writer and propagandist. The relationship between “Christianity and civilization” is a recurrent subject in his speeches and writings, between 1875 and 1908, the year of his death. Conceptual constants can be detected which associate the “great work of religious and social regeneration” with the alliance between Catholic Church and “civilization”. Christianity was and had been the creator of “civilization” and its weakening in the Uruguayan society would only imply corruption and barbarism. Subtle mutations are also appreciated, related to the recovery of republican principles and of material and scientific progress, associated with “civilization”. In that sense, civilization is understood as a process of “harmonic and progressive improvement of the physical, moral and intellectual faculties of man.”

Summary This article refers to the experience of the French Dominican friars in the province of Toulouse in Montevideo, and in the River Plate region, which began in the mid-20th century. In the study of the origins, development and exhaustion of the French Dominican project in Uruguay, become evident the complexity of this human and religious experience and the multiplicity of factors that influenced its history. This complexity was also increased by the profound changes that took place in Latin America, in the universal Church and in religious life, during these decades. We will focus especially on what we call the “Dominican glances” in relation to Latin America, the Southern Cone and Uruguay. On the one hand, there was in some friars a possible excessive confidence in the contributions that a group of French religious could make in Latin America. On the other hand, we can appreciate in what way, life in Uruguay and contacts with Ibero-American cultures were transforming the vision and life of each friar. Specifically, the positions varied from the comfort and appreciation of the beginnings, to positions of discontent, fatigue, annoyance - linked to the questioning of the Spanish and Italian roots of the region - to disregard, in some cases, when pastoral illusions focused on Peru and Mexico, considering these two countries as “a more authentic Latin America.”

They were: the Figlie di Maria Santissima dell’Orto, the Figlie de Nostra Signora della Misericordia, the Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice and the Suore Terziarie Capuccine di Loano, currently Suore Capuccine di Madre Rubatto. As hospitaller sisters and with the purpose of serving in the Hospital de Caridad of Montevideo, the Hermanas del Huerto -as they are known in the region- developed a double profile, namely helping and serving the sick, and promoting education. They became exclusively educators in the XXth century. In Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Brazil, the missionaries directed their actions to Italian immigrant groups as well as to the rising lower middle classes. In the same way that the French congregations which arrived at the same time, these religious institutes fostered the definition of educational models for women of the Southern Cone of South America, unexistent until then.

The article analyzes the circumstances of the arrival in the Southern Cone of the institute, founded in 1852 by Catherine Fabre in the South of France. This study will focus on the analysis of three episodes, as experiences of physcal, spiritual and personal itinerancy: the journey and the arrival of the first group of missionaries in 1874; the trip to San Juan (Argentina) in 1876; and the activities of the congregation around the cholera epidemic of 1886 in Montevideo.

Summary
This article refers to the experience of the French Dominican friars in the province of Toulouse in Montevideo, and in the River Plate region, which began in the mid-20th century.
