Once adult, males can reach over 3 m in total length, while females are smaller, rarely reaching 2 m long (Brazaitis, 1973). This species is distinguished from the other congeners, C. crocodilus, and C. yacare, by the presence of evident rostral ridges, wider head, and shorter rostrum, being the largest species of the genus (Roberto et al., 2021).

There are still few studies on the natural history of this species that allow a better understanding of its biology and can provide the basis for conservation actions. Studies on endoparasitism are an important source for the comprehension of ecological relationships, as well as for providing information on host biology and its relevance to ecosystems. Thus, we present information about the endoparasites helminths, the relationship of parasite abundance with the size of individuals and the parasite difference between the sexes in A. maranguapensis, to elucidate some characteristics in the host-parasite relationship and the use of the area of this anuran. We analysed 107 specimens deposited in the Herpetological Collection of the Federal University of Ceará, sampled from 2010 to 2012. Total prevalence of...

The monophyletic genus Adelophryne includes eight nominal species and a number of unnamed species of small frogs with direct development, which occur in Amazon, Atlantic Forest, and humid forested mountains of Northeast Brazil (Fouquet et al. 2012). Only the advertisement calls of A. adiastola, A. gutturosa, A. patamona, and A. mucronatus have been so far described (see MacCulloch et al., 2008; Lourenço-de-Moraes et al., 2012). On March 5th, 2012, we recorded four males A. maranguapensis in the litter, between 09:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. (air temp. 23 o C) at a place called Riacho Beija-Flor (03

The present study aims to contribute to the knowledge of the reproductive mode of this genus, by presenting information about the oviposition site, egg and clutch characteristics, and type of development of A.maranguapensis. This species is listed as in danger of extinction because it is endemic to the Serra de Maranguape, a small remnant of Atlantic Forest in northeastern Brazil that is under severe pressure of anthropic degradation. The study is based on twelve A.maranguapensis egg clutches found on leaves of bromeliads at heights of 0.5 to 4.4 m from the ground. The clutches contained 3 to 8 eggs, each approximately 5 mm in diameter, with a vitreous surface and dark material in its interior, and were all located in bromeliad leaf axils. The eggs from one of the clutches hatched into fully formed f...

This paper provides information on the reproduction of Adelophryne maranguapensis, a threatened species endemic to Serra de Maranguape, an Atlantic Forest relict surrounded by dry Caatinga phytophysiognomies. Our objectives were to identify the reproductive periods, verify any preference for breeding sites, review the reproductive mode and describe parental care. The species reproduces during the rainy season and is not selective as to the species of bromeliad used for oviposition. This is the first report of parental care for the genus since females demonstrate egg attendance until the formation of the gel layer in all the eggs. We revisit the terms that define the reproductive mode of this species and propose the need to redefine it. The redefinition considers: (1) deposition of bromeligen and non-aquatics eggs around the phytotelm; (2) direct development; (3) parental care with egg attendance by the female.

Tropidurus sp. nov. is morphologically similar to other species of the group in the marked dorsoventral flattening of the body, and the presence of a series of sublabial shields that are larger than the adjacent scales. It is distinguished by a single middorsal longitudinal light stripe that extends from the snout to the scapular region. The new species appears to have the largest body size of the group. The new species inhabits the Vale do Jaguaribe, in the eastern part of the state of Ceará, where there are many fissured rocky outcrops surrounded by hypoxerophytic caatinga vegetation.
