Attention was given to identifying the effects of mean stress and stress amplitude on the fatigue life and failure mechanisms. It was found that the fatigue life of the studied material decreased sharply with increasing stress amplitude at a constant mean stress level and also decreased at a fixed stress amplitude with increasing mean stress. However, analyses of the fatigue data and failure behaviour reveal that, for the studied material, fatigue failure mechanisms depend on the relative importance of mean stress and stress amplitude. At a mean stress level of 80% ultimate flexural strength, the failure results from accumulation of creep strain, while at mean stress levels of 40%, 50% and 60% ultimate flexural strength, the magnitude of stress amplitude influences the type of failure mechanism. As stress amplitude is reduced, the fatigue failure mechanism changes from matrix yielding dominated to crack growth dominated fracture.

The contemporary scientific literature identifies five different associations between leisure and mental health: 1) psychiatric disorders limiting possibilities of access to leisure; 2) leisure activities as an instrument for rehabilitation of people with mental disorders; 3) leisure which results in boredom associated with drug abuse; 4) the benefits of leisure for emotional well-being, and 5) leisure activities protecting against psychological symptoms. One of the limitations of biomedical and psychological models, which underlie leisure and mental health studies, is that they take as a departure point the assumption of mental health as a variable related to the individual. There are, however, aspects that transcend the individual and his/her personal life, related to how the socio-cultural determinants overlap and interpenetrate to form a broader str...

It is our interest to question how this conflict has affected the cultural identities of the population, in two different periods, and how has the introduction of new social actors to the scene, represented by the tourists, has been dislocating the tradilional residents, as a result of the new economic and social orders that have been established in those communities

We understand that, on the one hand, globalization is not characterized as a systematic totality; on the other hand, the local context does not constitute a domain contrastive to the global, being marked by the ephemerality of the religious performances, and, at the same time, transforming itself and simultaneously resignifying the wider environment. As a means of elaborating and giving support to this research question, we will highlight some challenges which are faced by the studies on the New Age movement and, more specifically, by what we hereon refer as religious therapeutic experiments, which redefine New Age religiosities by its grounding on the therapeutic dimensions (with larger prominence of s...

Practices and actions on which family and other community members engage are discussed through the idea of community therapeutic management , assumed to constitute a set of initiatives of certain social networks, meant to face the implications resulting from the health problem, among which are daily care, treatment seeking behavior and efforts towards one’s social rehabilitation and reintegration.
