Research’s methodology was mainly based on ethnography, whose main focus was Congado itself and not entrainment. This distinction is important because it could have resulted in different ethnographic experiences. By studying Congado’s musical time I aimed to contribute to enhance the knowledge about this important Brazilian tradition and, consequently, to better understand the people involved in its preservation and continuity. I followed a tendency in Brazilian ethnomusicological approaches, in which, according to Suzel Reily (2002), “the interest in Brazilian music and culture has been motivated by the desire to understand the country and to somehow contribute to the solution of its problems”. On the other hand, an important purpose behind the study of entrainment has to do, in my point of view, with...

Being the main means for social interactions, music is viewed as a privileged context for the protection, reconstruction, performance, and transmission of spiritual and other cultural knowledge among Africans and their descendants since colonial times, and thus for the reinterpretation of the Catholic faith. Historical and contemporary forms of the congado ritual are discussed, based on ethnographic research of present-day rituals, on a study of the literature on Bantu cultures and on slavery in Brazil, and on analysis of the drums’ performances. The main argument is that music has been used by participants as a conscious means of cultural resistance and survival, being a strategic context for keeping interactions and exchanges with their ancestors as well as for intra-group communication and social relations.

These rituals are accomplished through music. Thus singing, playing and dancing are a unique mode of praying. Focusing on the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary of Contagem and that of Jatobá—both situated in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, capital of Minas Gerais—the rhythmic behaviour of these groups is discussed, for the instruments and their rhythmic language are sacred. The variation procedures in the rhythmic patterns are related to the function of each group, to the time/space of performances and to the hierarchy holding of them by force of the legend behind the rituals. It focuses on the human relations, which become more intense and dialogical in this type of research. The importance of considering occasional misunderstandings throughout the process is highlighted, especially when there is a greater cultural gap between researcher and the people whose music is being researched, and forms of reducing them are discussed. The examples approached emerge from a research in progress, which is being developed together with Comunidade Negra dos Arturos (Black Community of Arturos), located in Contagem, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and the Associacao Cultural Arautos do Gueto (Arautos do Gueto Cultural Association), which is situated in Morro das Pedras, in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais.

At the same time, laws affecting institutionalized music instruction in Brazil have undergone significant changes. This paper discusses and analyzes a few perspectives and challenges for the joint application of two laws associated with these processes: Lei 10.639/2003, a law that defines “Afro-Brazilian history and cultures” as compulsory themes in primary and secondary education, and Lei 11.769/2008, a law that establishes music as a compulsory part of school curricula. Emphasis is placed on issues related to the integration and study of musical knowledge connected to Afro-Brazilian cultures within the context of formal education, based on a dialogue and intersection between ethnomusicology and music education. The issues developed in this paper show that knowledge produced in both fields have the potential to guide music teaching concepts and practices in schools so that they adequately consider the specificities of Afro-Brazilian musical knowledge. Still, while defending the idea that research, especially ethnomusicological research, offers music teachers an invaluable repertoire of concepts, symbols, and aesthetics related to such cultural practices, we nevertheless emphasize that their actual incorporation into music education in schools and, consequently, the promotion of multicultural and interethnic musical education in Brazil, is subject to a number of social and political issues that are still being developed.

Analyses were based on participants' perspectives about the origin and history of their religious tradition, which is based on their enslaved ancestors' experiences of pain. Those facts and events still highlight the sense of belonging to this tradition nowadays and make their performative acts meaningful, significant and thus wonderful.
