The paper presents a brief discussion on animal protection. It compares utilitarian propositions on animal rights, to the monist propositions of deep ecology. From this discussion emerges a third possibility which recognizes values in nature, and the juridical satus that is its consequence ; it also shows that these are a human attribution which depends on cultural evaluations. These latter are formulated on the basis of empirical informations, and an empathical and responsible culture.

Abstract: Part of the current debate on artificial intelligence questions whether consciousness is possible in the various digital formats. The present article answers this question focusing on the biological evolution of organisms, the differentiation of the nervous systems and the emergence of minds, stemming from the original organic sensibility. The intentionality of behaviors is conflated with the orientation of the minds, thus adjusting biology and psychology.

This research is part of the project TERRA-Transversalização Curricular e Consciência Ambiental (... more This research is part of the project TERRA-Transversalização Curricular e Consciência Ambiental (Curricular Transversalization and Environmental Awareness), which is further referred to in this book. It is an exploratory research that specifically arose from a set of proposals for cross-curricular infusion of socio-environmental themes, for the 7th year of basic education (EB) in Portugal. The Terra Project has been financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology-FCT (POCTI/LED/42610/2001)-and ERDF. Starting with the notion of the place as a mosaic of relations between nature/culture, the aim was to consolidate the way pupils read the socio-environmental complexity of the place, including its objective and subjective aspects, and how these were interlinked by them, making use of visual anthropology for the purpose. Photographs were a communication bridge, a kind of vehicle for accessing the pupils' socio-environmental knowledge, being a "...source of a broad spectrum of cultural, social and ecological information" (Collier & Collier 2002). Two schools from Greater Porto were involved, one of which is on the atlantic coast while the other is further inland. The research included three moments: 1) photographic record of the place (each pupil took photos of 6 places, then chose one of them and wrote a text about it) 2) choice of the place in terms of environmental criteria (small groups of pupils chose one place-one photo – among the initial photos, arguing about it as " environment ". This discussion was recorded in audio and video); 3) more detailed understanding of the conceptions of environment (pupils were showed the discussions previously recorded and were interviewed, when given back the pictures. This method allowed a better understanding of their environmental conceptions). This last discussion was specifically guided by approaching the socio-environmental questions already raised by the TERRA project, at a 2 micro, meso and macro level, and by topics emerging from the development of transversal proposals. These were: natural and cultural diversity, mobility, climate change, territory and land-use planning, heritage and conservation, advertising and consumption. This exploratory study collected data that helped to further structure the transversal proposals of the TERRA project, and helped to understand the conceptions of environment and learning in young people.

This recommendation advances that populations should participate in the decision making processes that concerns themselves. It is thus necessary to find possibilities of correlating different wisdoms, which not only respect the local ethno-methodological traditions, but also include broader objectives of sustainability. This paper presents a theoretical and empirical study in ecological ethnography so as to analyse the possibilities and the limits of such a relationship between wisdoms, in Environmental Education (EE).

Complex myths and magic allow for symbolic and practical ways to organize bodily based emotional experiences and social action, stemming from internal urges, affects and insights. Luc de Heusch's structural anthropology identifies four main religious ideologies – possession, shamanism, mediunism and prophetism – that share specific relationships to these bodily, mental and social experiences. They can be commented upon as the products of the analogic, affective and imaginative social brain and human theory of mind that shaped important aspects of cultural ideation and practices impacting on individual, social and ecological contexts of the evolution of cultural mentalities.
