Brazilian transport system has undergone a series of changes in recent years, highlighting the importance of an efficient transport matrix configured to obtain economies of scale and better economic competitiveness. The efficient use of transportation modes means improvement in the country's infrastructure, causing increases in competition at macroeconomic levels. In this sense, this work aims to achieve an operational and technical assessment of the situation of ports in the context of coastal shipping in Brazil, with emphasis on the situation of Port of Santos, pointing out the relationship between Cabotage and other modes of transport, such as the use of inter and multimodality, as a way to reduce infrastructure bottlenecks that still affect the country internal and externally. The methodology is characterised by a qualitative research in which the data were collected from literature and articles, in particular the information from the database of Brazilian National Agency of Waterway Transportation (ANTAQ). It was realised that terminals of the Port of Santos prioritise the transport of cargo to export and importation, resulting in the importance of an increased use of coastal shipping and feeder services in order to generate, a priori, positive effects and externalities for the entire logistic chain in Brazil.
