Gary Kitmacher
Dr. Gary H. Kitmacher has worked at Johnson Space Center since 1981. He has worked on the ISS, Freedom, Mir and several other development efforts over the course of his career. For the space station, Kitmacher was the Architectural Manager for Man-Systems and was instrumental in establishing the ISS lab module, node, cupola, and standard rack design requirements and configuration, and he established the human-systems habitability subsystems. Later he served as the subsystem manager for the Crew Health Care System. As the Mir/Priroda manager and later the manager for Mir operations and integration, he negotiated the contracts, and established the requirements and processes for the integration of US hardware and payloads on Mir. During this time he invented and developed the soft stowage system (CTBs), Crew On Orbit Support (COSS) computer system, and US GFE mechanical, electrical and data systems for Mir. He worked extensively in Moscow and Baikonur. Previously, Kitmacher was the mission manager for the first Spacehab commercial missions. He began his work for NASA as the stowage and crew equipment subsystem manager for Shuttle. Before joining NASA, he worked for Rockwell in the Shuttle Commercialization Office, streamlining the payload integration process and establishing agreements for the first Shuttle commercial payloads.Kitmacher has an extensive portfolio of books and technical papers about space craft design, space stations, ISS, Mir, future exploration, and space commercialization. He recently wrote the chapter for the Standard Handbook for Aerospace Engineers, about spacecraft design for human habitation and operations. He wrote the NASA/Apogee Books ISS Reference Guide and developed the ISS interactive website which won the Adobe Max international award. He recently completed two books about space station for the Smithsonian and NASA. He has been awarded the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal, 2 JSC Commendations, and the Silver Snoopy.
