Early childhood is a crucial period of life to promote children’s healthy eating habits. Since food concept is an important predictor of successful interventions of eating behavior, more knowledge is needed about food concept in early childhood. Food concept is a scheme that underlies eating behavior. Moreover, it is influenced by the culture and formed by eating habits and children’s significant others. Meanwhile, there is little known about food concept among preschool children in Indonesia, whereas food concept in Indonesia can be used as a guide to diminish the numbers of eating problems. This study used qualitative research using dyadic interviews to describe food concept on preschool children (4─6 years old) and its concept formation. The interview guide used in this study is adapted and has adjusted with Indonesian culture Slaughter & Ting (2010).  Four participants indicated characteristics of preoperational thought when explained food concept, covered purpose of eating, eff...

The natural disaster occurred in PASIGALA in 2018 left a significant impact on the survivors of liquefaction. Research on recovery after a disaster focuses on the positive outcomes by survivors. This study aims to determine the role of trauma exposure and family hardiness in developing posttraumatic growth (PTG). Participants in this study were 147 adult survivors (Musia = 23.06, SD = 4.12) spread across Palu City and Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi. PTG was measured by Posttraumatic Growth Inventory Short-Form (PTGI-SF), trauma exposure was measured by modification of the Earthquake Exposure Questionnaire and Impact of Event Scale, and family hardiness was measured by Family Hardiness Index (FHI). The hierarchical regression test found that trauma exposure and family hardiness significantly predicted 7% and 17.2% of posttraumatic growth variances when other variables were controlled. Then, the mediation test showed that family hardiness had a significant or partial role as a mediato...

Family resilience is an important ability for family in facing various challenges throughout the lifespan. The study about family resilience of Minangkabau ethnic people needs further exploration due to the increase in divorce rate in the last three years, indicating that these families were not resilient. The cause of the divorce was related to matrilocal residency (husband lives in wife’s house after marriage). This residency has the potential to cause the intervention of the wife’s family to the relationship of husband and wife, therefore leading to the lack of authority in the husband's role. This condition poses a risk to husbands to experience gender role discrepancy and discrepancy stress. The purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of gender role discrepancy and discrepancy stress to family resilience by involving 139 Minangkabau men who lived in the wife’s family house around the age 18-50 years old. This study used a quantitative research method. Sampling...

A resilient family is capable of survival, overcoming difficult challenges, and growing stronger. Cultural identity is among many factors that play a role in forming family resilience because the understanding and values of family resilience must be built in accordance with local culture. This study aims to analyze the factors that build family resilience in Indonesian families, especially those from the Batak Toba. It uses the Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire to measure family resilience (α = 0.879), the Responses to Stress Questionnaire to measure coping (α =0.755), and the Family Strains Index to measure strain (α =0.763). Another measurement tool is the Batak Toba Adat Questionnaire, which is used to measure cultural identity (α = 0.677), community support, and socioeconomic status (SES). The data is analyzed using linear structural relations through structural equation modeling (SEM). The study participants are individuals who use Batak Toba surnames (N = 295) of whom 51.2...

BACKGROUND Monitoring children’s intellectual development is important to align their educational needs. This study compared nonverbal intelligence subtest of the cognitive test battery for individuals with or without intellectual disability (CIID) to measure visual logical reasoning, verbal intelligence subtest (verbal fluency [VF]– animal test) to assess vocabulary and semantic memory, and the modified Indonesian version of Hopkins verbal learning test (IHVLT) to assess learning ability and episodic memory, against the Wechsler intelligence scale for children (WISC) as an alternative cognitive screening tool in school-aged children. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in 145 grade 1–6 elementary school students in Jakarta between March and May 2017. Performance on the CIID subtest, VF, and modified IHVLT was assessed by a pediatrician, and the WISC test was performed by a psychologist. The associations between variables were evaluated using nonparametric Spearman’s rank ...

Changes that occur rapidly during a pandemic are prone to causing psychological distress in adolescents. Therole of resources and the vulnerability index of resilience need to be explored as variables that affect psychologicaldistress. This study used a quantitative design with 111 adolescents who were collected online. Data were processedusing descriptive and correlation-regression analysis. The resource index has a negative effect of 12.6 %, while thevulnerability index has a positive effect of 21.2 % on psychological distress. The interaction of both indexes has a rolein psychological distress (R2= 0.21,F= 14.50,ρ= 0.000). Other findings indicate that participant psychological distress is high, with an average resource and a low vulnerability index. This study found that the higher the resourceindex, the lower psychological distress. Conversely, the higher the vulnerability index, the higher the psychologicaldistress. Intervention needs to be done by targeting both resilience ind...

The development of self-regulation of eating is strongly influenced by feeding practice. In addition, a child’s screen time has an effect on children eating behavior. The aim of this study was to determine whether screen time acts as a moderator to the relationship between feeding practice and the ability to self-regulation eating in preschool age. Method samples were 95 mothers who had children aged 3-6 years. Participants were chosen using convenient sampling. Data were analyzed using linear regression and sub-groups analysis with ANOVA factorial 2x2. Findings show that screen time doesn’t a moderator of the relationship between restrictive feeding practice and self-regulation of eating. The conclusion is the restrictive feeding practice can interfere with children’s self-regulation of eating abilities. However, the effect of screen time doesn’t significantly contribute to moderating the relationship between restrictive feeding practice and children’s self-regulation of eating

Feeding is the right time for parent and child to interact. Based on elicitation, it shows that there is lack of interaction between mother and child when feeding activity. This research is aimed to improve the quality of both interaction between mother and child, and deliver education that related to food and its’ function. One of the method which can be used to increase quality of interaction when feeding activity, is Mediated Learning Experience (MLE). Mediated Learning Experience is an active interaction when parent or substitute adult modify the stimulus to improve the child’s ability. MLE method given to mothers by training. This research is one group pre-test and post-test design research. Measurement in this study used Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks Test. The result on pre-test -- post-test 1 shows that p = 0,012 (p < 0,05) or can be said that there is a significant difference between the quality of parent and child interaction while feeding activity before and after being given M...
