Islands such as Ibiza have played a prominent role, understood as isolated regions where tradition has been preserved through modernity.
These approaches are reflected in the architecture of Germán Rodríguez Arias. Co-founder of the GATCPAC, he encouraged other group members to travel to Ibiza. After a long exile in Chile, he settled back on the island in the 1950s and engaged in tourism construction. His case illustrates the shift from an idealisation of the vernacular under the prism of modernity, to its repurposing for leisure and tourism.

The image of Spain as a tourist destination from an iconographic perspective, reflected on public... more The image of Spain as a tourist destination from an iconographic perspective, reflected on public photography, graphic guides, postcards, and cinema, has been pieced together and historically transformed according to the different institutional politics and the reaction to previous models. The numerous studies analyzing this adopt a socio-cultural and ideological vision that mostly attends to enduring cultural or psychological topics without impinging on the visual specific component or in what it supposes, from a historical-artistic approach, the survival of iconic and representative traditions. In the touristic figuration field, the transposition of media language strategies (Dorfles, 1973) and the quotes and counter-discourse to the previous imagery, which are still present in the new touristic modality linked to the popular culture tourism, have played a key role.

ABSTRACT:
The city of Palma, on the island of Majorca (Spain), owns a rich Gothic architectonic heritage and an interesting traditional architecture. Its condition as a touristic city has been the reason for some works over the heritage, which combine both right to accessibility and architectonic creation.
As a synthesis of that, three examples of restoration have been chosen for being analysed. Two of them referred to the Gothic and Renaissance heritage: the castle of Bellver, resto-red by the architects Elías Torres and José Martínez Lapeña, a building that receives but also sends glances due to its high location; the seafront of the city wall, also renovated by Torres and Lapeña; and a mill, the one called d’en Garleta, on a historic quarter of the city, transformed into a museum by Eva Prats and Ricardo Flores. The castle of Bellver is 2 km far away from historical centre, where the seafront of the city wall is located. Finally, the mill is situated in one of the quarters built on the exterior of the city wall.
The paper aim is to analyse the conditions under which the projects have been done, according to essential factors such as the past and future uses and users and their relationship with the surroundings. And also to think over construction subjects, like the appearance in all projects of the local stone marés, that has been used for ages in all Majorcan traditional constructions and that was recovered for the modern architecture by the Danish architect JØrn Utzon.

It has recently undergone a careful restoration process (2012), which involved some of those who helped build his second Majorcan home, Can Feliz, in the 1990s. The Island Council is currently appraising Can Lis as a possible listed building, and the present article draws attention to its special value as well as the restoration itself. The Danish architect is shown as the exponent of a different kind of tourism to the usual package variety associated with the island.

Focus is placed on the work of photographic landscape observatories within the European framework, on issues regarding their active development at the present time, and on their effectiveness and presence in tasks related to raising awareness. The UNESCO definitions of Historic Urban Landscape and Cultural Landscape and their revisions launched a debate about the need to document and disseminate landscape —through several media— as strategies to promote reflection among the inhabitants of a region. Since the European Landscape Convention, groups, institutions, and organisations have worked towards encouraging citizen participation in the reflection on the territorial changes brought about by industrialisation, tourism, and urban growth. Along these lines, it is worth looking into the type of methodologies and tools available in photographic observatories and their ability to connect local experience with expert knowledge on historic landscape.

On the one hand, José Antonio Corrales and Ramón Vázquez Molezún were commissioned to design new suites for Hotel Formentor, in the north of the island, which had just been extended.
On the other hand, Federico Correa and Alfons Milà were in charge of the interiors of Coderch’s Hotel de Mar. The project involved all spaces -from rooms to the bar- and all possible scales -from the stage of the dancing room to the vents.
Though both projects are quite unknown, especially the one in Hotel Formentor, they are major examples of hotel interior design and two of the few cases in the Balearics, because this discipline is often considered as a second-class activity by architects, promoters and historians.
The paper aims at recovering these projects that no longer exist. The first one has been recently demolished and the second one has undergone several changes from the 1980’s on.
Through the analysis of the project plans, drawings, reports and photographs and also by comparing them with other works by their authors, a study is proposed of shapes, materials and colours used to arrange the furnishings and to create a homely feeling.
The conclusions point to a connection with the beginnings of industrial design in Spain and an intimate relationship with other personal designs by the same architects. In relation with the international context, Correa and Milà are closely linked to Italian influences. But, above all, the soberness of both projects breaks with the overwhelming decoration of some of the most popular America hotel designers, as Morris Lapidus, and set them up as alternatives to the usual impersonality and excesses of leisure interiors.

Abstract:
Historical study on the appreciation and analysis of the house done by different american photographers, architects and researchers that travelled around Majorca during the 1920’s, such as Arthur Byne, Mildred Stapley Byne, Richard Requa o Ruth Matilda Anderson. We centre on the differences between their photographs and the new idealised imaginary of the illustrated magazine. We focus our text on two axes based upon the works in Majorca: (a) which value acquired the study of the local house and (b) what their travel meant. Our aim is to analyse which domestic spaces interested them, which indoor or outdoor house elements they observed, if they took heed of the decorative repertoire or they emphasised the structure, if they worked the antagonism between vernacular architecture, elite architecture and modern architecture; and to study the causes of their visits to the island –tourism and rest, work commissions or documental research.

Abstract:
Refuge and Tourism in The Balearic Islands. Photographers and multidisciplinary artists during the interwar period. During the decades of the 1920s’ and 1930s’, many photographers and multifaceted European artists dwelled temporarily in the Balearics as the archipelago was a tourist station linked to leisure and cultural tourism with a low-price economy and affordable living standards and it was closed to the metropolis. For both reasons many intellectuals arrived to the Islands. Some of them looked for direct contact with the territory and firsthand knowledge of it, others stopped there in their international tourist routes, others sought for refuge or seclusion in the context of ideological and economic crisis of the interwar Europe.
The text we present is a synthetic exposition of the activities that some of them carried out during their stay in the Islands: to photograph it in order to publish the images in magazines, books and postcards (Pierre Boucher), to canoe through it (Charlotte Perriand), to draw it (Marcus Adam), to settle down temporarily or permanently (Hans Hartung and Anna-Eva Bergman, Emil Orsinger) and to refuge from de Jewish persecution (Lore Krüger).
The paper is part of the research project I+D+i: HAR2016-77135-P.
ABSTRACT:
Abstract: When facing up a study about contemporary architecture is essential to generate a record of the buildings that arranges all the information obtained all along the process in order to ease the analysis. The usual method is to create a catalogue of the constructions where the compiled data only refer to the initial state of the building, accompanied by a description of it. This cannot be enough to explain the history of the building, ignoring the possible changes of the program that it holds or its shape and size transformations, which are very common when talking about contemporary constructions and which play a very important role in the way we perceive them. A research in architecture for tourism in the Balearics has provoke a reflexion about the traditional form of designing the architecture catalogues and has led to put into practice an evolutionary model that answers to the necessity of collecting all the periods of the life of the building. Thanks to that, it has been possible to optimize the tasks during the research and to increase the effectiveness of the searches in the archives, obtaining a database that can help to the preservation and the rehabilitation of architectural heritage.

ABSTRACT:
The Revista Nacional de Arquitectura included in its July 1955 issue a large report about the hotel Bahía Palace. Located in the Paseo Marítimo of Palma and designed by Francisco J. Goicoechea and Jacinto Vega, it was the first contemporary touristic lodging in Mallorca. The description of the building was accompanied by ten photographs that constitute an exceptional document for knowing the equipment as it was in its origins. But any of them was signed, and the photographer’s name didn’t appear in the captions. Research in the photographic collections of the Estudio Rul·lan preserved in the Arxiu del So i de la Imatge de Mallorca has brought to light a report about the hotel formed by 172 negatives in which are the ones used in the Revista Nacional del Arquitectura. The images show the exteriors and the more representative rooms as well as other places such as the reception, the boutiques and all kind of furniture and ornamentation details that are usually unnoticed in touristic architecture photography. Considering the relevance of the building as an antecedent of the touristic boom, the paper questions if the objective of the photographic work was to announce the hotel among construction and tourism promoters and professionals or if it was addressed to a wider audience as the images were also used in advertising. That case questions the intentionality and the uses of architecture photography focused on tourism and the multiple ways through which the images spread. At the same time, it evidences the existence of a huge volume of photographic heritage that remains unknown or anonymous.

Abstract:
The paseo Marítimo is one of the main streets of Palma. Built less than 75 years ago with a touristic aim, it has transformed the urban configuration and has turned into a symbolic image of the city. The construction of the Dique del Oeste, protected the city from the sea storms. It permitted the creation of a road joining the port and the airport in the seafront, the paseo Marítimo. But with the arrival of mass-tourism it had to be enlarged and since then, it has suffered several modifications. At the same time, it has been occupied with buildings for the tourists. In this process, published photography has played an important role as a promoter of the site. From the 40’s and during the construction of the promenade, the number of photographs increased. They allow doing a study of the evolution of the urbanization process, while they serve as touristic advertisement that spread the architecture. So, a contemporary architectural heritage is being added to the historical architectural heritage which we can find all along the paseo Marítimo. The buildings made for the tourists to come and visit the city end up being claimed as heritage elements.
It explains the history of three hotels in Mallorca: Grand Hotel in Palma (written by Carla Guardiola), hotel Formentor in Pollença and hotel America in Calas de Mallorca (written by María Sebastián).
ABSTRACT:
The thesis analyses tourist architecture and urbanism designed in the Balearic Islands between 1939 and 2005. The main objective is to study the historical artistic evolution of construction and urban planning, locating and surveying the most prominent buildings and its architects. It also examines the role of photography in the architect’s office and in the diffusion of architecture.
The research begins by establishing the definition of tourist architecture and the typologies included in it, divided into three categories related to their use –transport, lodgement and leisure-. It is followed by a recapitulation of the history of tourist architecture both in the international and Spanish context. Then it focuses on the specific analysis of the case of the Balearic Islands, divided into five chronological periods delimitated by projects and historical events that alter the course of architecture. In the first one (1939-1952) the foundations are laid for the return of tourism after Spanish Civil War, with works still based on traditional schemes. The second one (1953-1962) shows how architectural modernity arrives to the Islands due to foreign developers and architects, it quickly spreads among local professionals and it is diffused in specialised and non-specialised press. The third one (1963- 1973) focuses on the peak of the first tourist boom and the policies of the so-called desarrollismo which spurs the building industry, heightened with increasingly repetitive types that are reproduced in media such as postcard. During the fourth one (1974-1981) oil crisis stops the building sector and, with the end of Franco’s dictatorship and the awakening of environmental consciousness, citizens become involved into urban planning debates against territory exploitation. In the fifth one (1982-2005) economy reactivates, urban expansion increases again and tourist architecture assumes postmodern relativist postulates, avoiding the most avant-garde trends and coming close to kitsch.
