This chapter analyzes representations of different types of practitioners (doctors, homenurses, and apothecaries) and the use of home remedies in Costa Rica in the second half of the nineteenth century from a literary point of view. It focuses on a selection of sketches of manners published in Costa Rican newspapers and a few advertisements, which offer the vivid image of a dynamic coexistence between the different types of medical practitioners and practices.
