This study would like to investigate to which extent the social environmental factors influenced the non-Muslims' Bidayuhs understanding and familiarities with Halal principles and Halal food products in a country whereby almost 60 percent of the population is Muslim. Self administered questionnaires were distributed to 150 non-Muslim Bidayuh in Kuching, Sarawak to gather information on their understanding of Halal principles and food products. The result shows that non-Muslim Bidayuh consumers are aware of the existence of Halal food. In fact, the factor such as mixing with Muslims socially and the presence of advertising Halal food significantly influence non-Muslims' understanding of Halal principles. They also understand that Halal principles are concerned about food safety issues and environmentally friendly ways of doing things. Even though there is an increasing trend in the attitude and purchasing intention of halal labeled food by non-Muslim consumers, the study shows that there is no significant evidence that they are highly confident with the halal logo that were certified by JAKIM. The practical implications extend to food policy decision makers and food marketers who might pursue strategies in their distribution and communication efforts which target the growing Halal food or this particular market segment.
