Namely, in the first three centuries, chistian church was organized on the principle of episcopes and metropolitans. This organizational structure reflects the system characteristic for late antique society. However, with the intensification of the process of centralization of the Church, gradually appeared the need for a new, different model of its organization: the patriarchal model. Patriarchate as a new institution itself concentrated highest ecclesiastical authority in a certain territory. Also, each Patriarchate was consisted of metropolises which itself included certain number of bishops.
Based on the available historical sources, we believe that the formation of the patriarchal model of church organization was a process that began in the late third century, for the first time recorded in the Acts of the Nicene Council of 325, and fully canonical specified in Acts of the Fourth Ecumenical Council of 451.
With the emergence of the patriarchal model, the Ecumenical Church was gradually organized into five patriarchates: Rome, Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalem and Constantinople. Their organization into patriarchates is associated with the reputation which they enjoyed in the Christendom.

until the mid-19th and early 20th century, almost nothing concrete is known about their
functions, rights and obligations. The situation has changed remarkably in the second half
of the 19th century thanks to the discovery of the ancient Christian literature monuments
called Didache - Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, and the Shepherd of Hermas. Thanks to
the testimonies contained therein, we are able to compile the image of functions apostle,
prophet and teacher. That issues, associated with these early Christian functions is the subject

These debates later on developed into new religious divisions, which resulted in the convening of the Fifth Ecumenical Council in 553. The convening of this Council was meant to put an end to these debate and to pave the way for establishment of Church unity. The background of these theological disputes were the political and religious conflicts between Rome and Constantinople. The participation of the bishops of the Macedonian Provinces is the main subject of interest in this research.

Sources confirm that the bishops from Macedonia, without exception, continued to believe in the Nicene symbol of faith. This was the case with Monophysitism which was condemned by the bishop and clergy of the Vicariate from Thessalonika. This conclusion is based on available sources that testify about the participation of bishops from Macedonia in the "Robber Council" held in Ephesus in August of 449 and the Council of Chalcedon (451). Namely, at the "Robber Council" seven participants were from the province of Macedonia Prima, and, at the Council of Chalcedon (Fourth Ecumenical) at least nine bishops were from the provinces of Macedonia Prima and Macedonia Secunda.
