Employing Web-mining techniques on 35 leading news sites in the 10 most popular Internet languages, we calculated and tracked the relative prominence of countries in the world’s economic news from 2009 to 2012, a time of economic recession. Our findings suggest that major changes in GDP, even in relatively small economies, are no less important than overall GDP in explaining countries’ prominence in world economic news. Time-lag analysis of change in GDP and in news prominence identified three types of relation between news prominence and economic performance, reflecting the extent of world interest, press freedom, and the availability of reporting facilities. Network analysis of country co-mentions revealed three ripples when crisis hit non-core European countries, extending first to Europe’s leading economies, then global leading economies, and finally global developing economies. We discuss our findings’ implications for future research in the field.

The development of the information society, globalisation and technology has generated a process ... more The development of the information society, globalisation and technology has generated a process of adaptation in news companies. The technological evolution has produced notable changes in the production, distribution and reception of information. Not all media companies and countries have faced this reality in the same way. Many have been conditioned by the economic and political issues that determine this process. In the case of Latin America, there are differences that respond to the development level of the different countries and regions, and this highlights the existence of a digital divide. Based on four case studies, this article addresses the technological evolution experienced by four online news media companies from different Latin American countries: jornada.unam.mx (from Mexico), prensalibre.com (from Guatemala), emol.com (from Chile) and clarin.com (from Argentina). The objective of the study is to measure the impact of technology in journalism throughout Latin America in order to detect the structural differences. The study is based on the answers of the directors of the aforementioned online news media companies to a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory interview. The interviews took place between March and June 2011. The analysis of the results shows that there has been a remarkable progress and adaptation to the needs of the Latin American Society in recent years, but that there are also differences in terms of development levels according to the economic situation of the different countries, which conditions these companies’ forecasts for their technological investment and innovation in the near future.

The role of media in Internet has undergone many changes as a result of trying to adapt continuously to the changeable digital environment. It is aware that, besides technological developments, there are other economical, social, cultural and politic factors affecting the progress of communication companies. However, this work tries to focus specifically on the analysis of the effects caused by technology in cyber-media. This study is based on the results of two former R&D&I projects on the impact of Internet on the media (BSO2002-04206-C04-04) and on digital convergence (SEJ2006-14828-C06-04), which were financed by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science. Besides, this work is carried out under a new project (CSO2009-13713-
C05-02) studying the cyber-media development, with special focus on the technological development of cyber-media, which is coordinated by the author of this work. Therefore, this communication includes one of the preliminary studies of a major research project, in which more than twenty researchers from different Spanish universities are involved.
2. Objectives:
The objective of this research is to prove that technology affects all stages of the cyber-media communication process, particularly the ones related to the content production process (tasks and tools), to distribution platforms, as well as to supports and devices for receipt. It is considered that technology not only leads to changes in the communication process, but also, in the cyber-media management systems (audience rating and business models).
3. Methodology
The methodology to achieve the research objectives consists of an explorative study which allows us to approach a subject that has been hardly studied. To this end, an assessment of literature is made in order to know the status of this matter and define the variables that should be taken into account in further analysis.
4. Results
The results of this study are entered descriptively, they extend knowledge on this matter and they show how technology has been present from the time cyber-media were born until today. This allows us to detect tendencies facing the future, which will contribute the decision making process of information companies about technological investments and their possibilities of achieving the best investment return. The effects of technology on the communication companies object of this study is especially useful for those who have not undertaken the digital convergence yet, since the knowledge of the studied cases facilitates to plan its implementation in a correct and gradual way, adapting the technology to the objectives and real possibilities of each company. The conclusion is that there is not one single model for implementing technology in cyber-media, and that the technology is applied by every medium according different particular and non-transferable factors. Nevertheless, despite the technological diversity, there are tendencies for the future and aspects that can be applied in general.
