In this article, the reasons for trusting science and science education are analyzed through three arguments. The first is that both the belligerent obscurantism and fake news of the ultra-right and the postmodern relativism of sections of the leftwing are connected to objective movements from the capitalist socioeconomic reality. The reestablishment of trust in science and its teaching requires an effort to understand the contemporary social contradictions, problems, and challenges. The second argument is that scientific knowledge does not need to abdicate objectivity in order to ground ethical and political positions. The third argument is that the socialization of scientific knowledge through school education is a necessary, albeit insufficient, condition for the ethical-political education of younger generations. The article concludes by stating that it is necessary to overcome the choice between an education that is supposedly neutral in political and ideological terms and an education that rejects the socialization of scientific knowledge in the name of respecting the multiplicity of culturally rooted voices from within the different oppressed groups present in today's society.

In order to achieve this goal, the text is divided in three parts. Firstly, we discuss the counterpoint between the conception of knowledge present in historical-critical pedagogy and the hegemonic conception of knowledge. Secondly, based on the works of Karl Marx (1818-1883) and Friedrich Engels (1820-1895), productions by György Lukács (1885-1971) and authors close to his thinking, such as Agnes Heller (1929-2019) and GyörgyMárkus (1934-2016), we seek to establish the relations between the construction of universal values and the classic. Lastly, in the third part, we analyze educational work as a process situated in the scope of school education and linked to the preservation of universal values condensed in classic knowledge. We observed that the understanding of the classic based on the constitution of universal values is fundamental to an understanding of its conformation as a product of human activity. The values condensed in classic knowledge, beyond the social-historical link, transcend towards universality. The adequate comprehension of this process allows us to overcome the antinomy between dogmatism and relativism, a fundamental condition to understanding the concept of classic as postulated by historical-critical pedagogy.

To this end, an approximation is made between György Lukács' philosophical-ontological reflection on the dialectic between teleology and causality in work activity and analysis carried out by Lev Vigotski on the importance of sign systems for human psychic development. It is concluded that creation involves complex relations between the freedom of the subjects and the socio-cultural determinations. Keywords: Creation. Creativity. Freedom. György Lukács. The implications of Bolsonarism for the production and diffusion of knowledge in Brazilian public... more The implications of Bolsonarism for the production and diffusion of knowledge in Brazilian public institutions of higher learning are analyzed in this article through the development of three theoretical arguments. The first one is that Bolsonarism is part of a broader sociocultural phenomenon that is obscurantism, which therefore requires an understanding of the processes that feed obscurantism worldwide and particularly in Brazil. The second is that obscurantism is connected in a non-accidental way with neoliberalism, taken here to mean the contemporary form of organizing not only the economy but all social practice and, consequently, the different dimensions of human life. The central political and ideological vector of neoliberalism is that the freedom of individuals can only be ensured by a society that is commanded by the spontaneity of the market. The neoliberal defense of freedom is, in reality, an imprisonment of society to a perspective that removes from human beings the possibility for making choices about the future of humanity. In this sense, the fight against Bolsonarism may not achieve significant results if it is not part of the struggle for the liberation of society from its entrapment by market logic. The third argument presented in this article is that productivism, as an academic expression of neoliberalism, configures the production and dissemination of knowledge in public institutions of higher learning in a way that favors the penetration of obscurantism into academic life.

Contrary to some interpretations that separate political-cultural obscurantism from neoliberalism, it is argued in this article that they are two sides of the same coin. The neoliberal worldview, connecting the idea of freedom to the assumption that social evolution should be ruled by the free market's logic, contains a kind of rationality that leads to the most irrational forms of thought and sociability, becoming a fertile ground for the spread of belligerent obscurantism. KEYWORDS: Neoliberalism. Obscurantism. Common sense.

Analyzing the didactic method of historical-critical pedagogy, the Brazilian educator Dermeval Sa... more Analyzing the didactic method of historical-critical pedagogy, the Brazilian educator Dermeval Saviani, defines catharsis as the culmination of the educative process. This paper explores the importance of catharsis to Didactics in that pedagogical perspective, taking the studies of György Lukács (1885-1971) and Antônio Gramsci (1891-1937) in that category as theoretical references. Catharsis is understood here as a qualitative leap in the process of expansion and enrichment of relations between individual subjectivity and social-cultural objectivity. It is, at the same time, an intellectual, emotional, educational, political and ethical transformation, that changes the worldview of the individuals and their relations with their own life, society and humankind.

Educational studies in Brazil have a strong tradition based on Marxist dialectical thinkers as Gr... more Educational studies in Brazil have a strong tradition based on Marxist dialectical thinkers as Gramsci, Lukács and Kosik. One of the most significant Marxist approaches in the field of pedagogical theories in Brazil is called Historical-Critical Pedagogy. The non-critical educational approaches defend an almost immediate identification of the school contents and methods with the pragmatic needs emerged in everyday practices and this perspective ignores the dialectics phenomena-essence and takes the pseudo-concrete as the real
concrete. Historical-Critical Pedagogy takes the opposite direction and understands that the way to engage school education in a transformative social praxis is to organize the school curriculum in order to provide the conceptual tools required to take the “detour” that Kosik, based on Marx, considered necessary for human beings to grasp the essence of social reality. This paper will be an attempt to explore the points of intersection between Dialectics of Concrete and Historical-Critical Pedagogy.

Based on Hegel and Marx, Vygotsky considered the use of tools and signs as mediating activities. ... more Based on Hegel and Marx, Vygotsky considered the use of tools and signs as mediating activities. A typical mediating activity is the one in which human beings transform objects or phenomena into means of action. In order to do that human beings must work with the objective characteristics of the objects in relation to the activity goals. The transformation of something into a mediation inside the activity requires the development of the mental capacity to work with indirect relations between the human needs which generates the activity and each specific component of the entire process that leads to the achievement of a good final result. In this sense, activity puts in movement, at the same time, the external reality and the psychological processes. However, we must consider that human activity is collective in its most basic forms and its success depends on the development of efficient processes of communication as much as on the use of powerful tools. The use of signs and the development of systems of signs generate the complexification of inter-psychical and intra-psychical functions. At this point the retroactive effect of all this process on the motive of human actions has to be considered. On the one hand it is true that an activity is always motivated by needs but, on the other hand, the use and the transformation of systems of tools and signs generates historically new kinds of human needs beyond the level of subsistence. From the dialectical perspective this is a crucial aspect to be considered by educational projects which intend to promote the expansion of the horizons of students’ life and society views. Marx wrote in Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts that “The rich human being is simultaneously a human being necessitated of a totality of exteriorization of life, a human being in whom their own realization exists as inner necessity, as need.” There is a dialectical relation between human powers and human needs: human needs required the development of human powers, however, the opposite is also true, that is to say, human necessities have been developed, transformed and created by the development of human powers. Both, the powers and the needs, exist objectively inside social relations and cultural phenomena. The challenge of education is to reproduce this dialectical relation between powers and needs in the process of the individual’s development. The possibility of intentional social production of needs is something proved everyday. The most expressive contemporary demonstration of this possibility is the creation of needs by the market and the culture of consumerism. From the perspective of the historical-critical pedagogy, education must develop in all learners a critical attitude towards this alienating process. At the same time, education can create needs connected to the highest levels of human cultural production as science, arts and philosophy. This pedagogical issue can be particularly illuminated by the historical and cultural dialectic between needs and activities. The process of teaching sciences, arts and philosophy does not have to be limited to the satisfaction of the needs that learners bring with them from their everyday life. Of course one of the tasks of education is to develop the self-awareness of these everyday needs recognizing their origins and how they can promote or block the development of individuality. However, education can be more than this, it can generate new necessities for the learners by the process of working with school contents situated beyond the limits of everyday life. In this sense, instead of being a process of adaptation to the status quo, education would be a production of dissatisfaction with the manipulated life in the contemporary capitalist society.

taken many forms: from the coup against the president to the proposals of laws against worker’s rights. There is a
revival of a motto used during the dictatorship: “Brazil: love it or leave it”. In this context “to love Brazil” is understood
as to accept social inequalities as naturals and to cultivate entrepreneurship as the solution to poverty and
unemployment. The school curricula and the teachers have been considered suspicious of dissemination of leftist
ideology. Some politicians are trying to approve laws prohibiting any kind of discourses inside schools that reveal

neutral. In this paper will be presented some contributions of Vygotsky’s psychology to the critical analyses of that

In order to approach this topic the author has been developing a theoretical study of Georg Lukács’ works on aesthetics and Lev Vygotsky’s works on psychology of art. The fundamental assumption of this study is that the comprehension of relations between individuals and art within the creative and receptive artistic process can provide theoretical tools to the analysis of the developing of human nature as a cultural and historical process. The paper sustains the thesis that school education has to produce in the new generations the necessity of kinds of knowledge normally not demanded by the everyday experience, like science, art and philosophy. This thesis goes directly against the educational theories in which a good school education must be the one orientated by the necessities spontaneously emerged in the students’ everyday lives.

O texto
etnocentrismo e o relativismo cultural.
