Nicht nur in Forschungskreisen ist die späturnenfelderzeitliche Höhenbefestigung Heunischenburg b... more Nicht nur in Forschungskreisen ist die späturnenfelderzeitliche Höhenbefestigung Heunischenburg bei Kronach-Gehülz bestens bekannt. Zwischen 1983 und 1987 konnten bei Ausgrabungen auf dem nur etwa 1,4 ha großen Spornplateau auf dem Wolfsberg eine mehrphasige steinerne Befestigungsanlage im Osten mit sich anschließender umlaufender Palisadenwehr sowie ein ausgeklügelter Tangentialtorbereich dokumentiert werden. Dabei sorgten nicht nur die für das Gebiet nördlich des Alpenkamms vergleichslose Architektur, sondern auch die zahlreichen Bronzefunde – überwiegend Waffen und Rüstungsteile – für Aufsehen. Mit der aufwendigen Rekonstruktion von 1986 und 2000 am Originalstandort, ließ sich diese bedeutsame Anlage auch für Besucher wieder erlebbar machen. Wissenswertes musste hingegen einer einzelnen Informationstafel entnommen werden, die freilich nur das Wesentlichste kurz zusammenfassen konnte. Über die Jahre flachte die Aufmerksamkeit etwas ab, was die Stadt Kronach dazu veranlasste die Heunischenburg einerseits durch die Schaffung einer neuen Beschilderung vor Ort und andererseits die Integration in die Neukonzeption des Frankenwaldmuseums auf der Festung Rosenberg für Besucher erfahrbarer zu machen. Für die inhaltliche Realisierung konnte die Stadt das Institut für Ur- und Frühgeschichte der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) als Kooperationspartner gewinnen. Noch im selben Jahr wurde vom Institut eine Magnetometerprospektion im Vorfeld der Anlage durchgeführt, die jedoch keine nennenswerten neuen Ergebnisse lieferte. Das Potenzial wurde dennoch erkannt und eine umfassende Untersuchung des Areals innerhalb und im Umfeld der Befestigungsanlage angestrebt. Mit Unterstützung der Stadt Kronach bildete sich in der Folge ein Arbeitskreis Heunischenburg, in dem sich rasch verdiente ehrenamtliche Bodendenkmal- und Heimatpfleger sowie an Archäologie und Heimatgeschichte interessierte Bürgerinnen und Bürgern versammelten. Auf dieser Grundlage konnte ein Antrag auf Projektförderung im Sachgebiet Ehrenamt des BLfD gestellt werden. Jeweils in den Anfangsmonaten der Jahre 2019 und 2020 konnten die Geländearbeiten in enger Kooperation zwischen der Firma Archäoscout , dem BLfD und den Ehrenamtlichen des Arbeitskreises Heunischenburg durchgeführt werden.

The Cueva de Ardales is a hugely important Palaeolithic site in the south of the Iberian Peninsul... more The Cueva de Ardales is a hugely important Palaeolithic site in the south of the Iberian Peninsula owing to its rich inventory of rock art. From 2011–2018, excavations were carried out in the cave for the first time ever by a Spanish-German research team. The excavation focused on the entrance area of the cave, where the largest assemblage of non-figurative red paintings in the cave is found. A series of 50 AMS dates from the excavations prove a long, albeit discontinuous, occupation history spanning from the Middle Palaeolithic to the Neolithic. The dating of the Middle Palaeolithic layers agrees with the U/Th dating of some red non-figurative paintings in the entrance area. In addition, a large assemblage of ochre lumps was discovered in the Middle Palaeolithic layers. Human visits of the cave in the Gravettian and Solutrean can be recognized, but evidence from the Aurignacian and Magdalenian cannot be confirmed with certainty. The meeting was attended by more than 60 scientists, students and amateur archaeologists from Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Italy, Switzerland and Denmark. A total of 20 papers were presented. In addition to the reports from the individual work areas of the participants, the Bavarian Mesolithic and a workshop on settlement dynamics in the Mesolithic were in the focus of the meeting.
