Although these readings have focused mainly on his mythological plays, interpretations in this line have also been proposed for La Aurora en Copacabana, play in which the playwright represented the emergence of the Marian cult of Copacabana, as well as the Discovery , Conquest and Evangelization of Peru. This article questions the validity of two of such readings, one of which goes so far as to propose that Calderón denied the Evangelization of Peru.

This opera was the first of three approaches to the Hispanic world of this composer, whose rise in the musical world of his country coincided with the establishment of Nazi Germany. In Columbus, Egk represented the history of Christopher Columbus from his interviews with the Catholic Monarchs until his death in misery, after his deposition of the government of the Spanish colonies in America. The libretto, written by the composer, used the negative stereotypes about Spain that existed in the German imaginary to criticize the colonial-ism of the time. Ironically, the opera would end up joining the musical culture of Nazi Germany.

It... more Columbus, German musician Werner Egk’s (1901-1983) first opera, was composed as a radio opera. Its first transmission was in 1933, shortly after the appointment of Adolf Hitler as Chancellor of Germany, and was harshly criticized. However, a year later the opera was performed as concert in Munich and in 1941 a version for the stage was premiered at the Frankfurt Opera. Columbus was represented even after the fall of the Nazi regime and the composer prepared a third version in 1951. In this paper we study how this opera, outside and even contrary to the ideological principles of Nazism, got inserted into its official culture.

La aurora en Copacabana is the only comedy on the New World written by Pedro Calderón de la Barca... more La aurora en Copacabana is the only comedy on the New World written by Pedro Calderón de la Barca in which he represented the history of the discovery, conquest and evangelization of Peru. As sources for his composition the playwright used the second part of the Comentarios reales of the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and the Historia del Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Copacabana of the Augustinian friar Alonso Ramos Gavilán. According to the circumstances of the comedy’s composition, this paper analyzes Calderón’s dramatization of the myth on the origin of the Incas.

Utilizing Marc Vitse’s definitions of “formas englobadas” and “formas englobadoras”, this essay assesses the relationship amongst the pieces in singing, alternated within the play, the changes of metre, and the sound effects used. Thus it is demonstrated that the development of such parts goes along the progress of Peru’s Christianization. Towards the end of the play, the singing, initially related to indigenous idolatry, ends up being taken by the vice royal government of Peru.
