Some studies have formalized the disruptive technology, investigating the mechanism and determinants of disruption. While some modern technologies are understood to be disruptive, they also exhibit increasing return to the adoption properties or network effects. However, how the network effects influence the disruption mechanism has only received little attention in the previous formal disruptive technology models. Therefore, in this study, we developed a formal model to investigate the dynamics of disruption by exploring the interaction of technology development, the consumer’s choice, firm’s decision, and structure of demand under the influence of different degrees of network effects. The model is simulated using agent-based software of the Laboratory for Simulation Development (LSD). We argue that weak network effects allow for d...

The rapid growth of start-ups in both developed and developing nations is observed due to an increase of entrepreneurship education in the curriculum of formal education institutions. The Open Innovation (OI) has been known since early 2000s where this model was utilized by various organizations to develop strategic partnership and creating a ‘win-win’ scenario. If implemented properly, OI model can generate a better product and services (Pile, 2018). In supporting a start-up’s growth in their initial stage, Corporate Accelerator (CA), as one of OI models, offers a more intensive way. In several cases, contrasting differences between start-up and big company is proven to be a challenge for arranging a partnership. CAs must maximize start-up’s incentives while creating significant profits for them (Kohler, 2016). Since the OI paradigm and how it was related to the industry and start-up partnership model is still rare, this paper tries to provide a conceptual model for an im...

Startups creation is an indication of the growing number of entrepreneurs, which ultimately burgeon the employment number. Currently, the government and private sector seek to engage in generating entrepreneurs who conceivably could improving the economic conditions of the nation. One of the ways to do this is by creating an incubator. An incubator ideally should have a performance appraisal guidance as a self-assessment. This study attempts to fill in the literature gap that was scantly exploring the performance indicators through comparison of the university-based incubators with the private incubators. This research employs a qualitative approach through an in-depth interview with the main actors that directly supervise and manage the incubator. The results show that the success indicator of incubator generally based on the purpose of the incubator. Private business incubator more likely to be more optimal in ensuring the startup becomes independent and achieving fast-g...

Massive investment and collaboration become prerequisites for this technology to be successfully implemented and bring the most benefit. This research discusses the diffusion of 5G technology to personal end-users and industries and simulates the collaboration model. The simulation analyzes key essential indicators for stakeholders, such as the number of adopters, diffusion time, and total revenue. This study follows the pragmatism philosophy and abductive approach, integrating qualitative and quantitative research, resulting in the diffusion model. The qualitative data was obtained through focus groups and semi-structured interviews with key sources, while quantitative data from 437 people were gathered through a questionnaire. The simulation resulted in a 34% improvement in diffusion time, leading to faster investment return for industry players. This study offers an altern...

However, different countries face different challenges during this transition, particularly developing countries. This research aims to create a framework for the transition to EV in Indonesia through Agent-Based Modeling (ABM). The framework is used as the conceptual design for ABM to investigate the effect of agents’ decision-making processes at the microlevel into the number of adopted EV at the macrolevel. The cluster analysis is equipped to determine the agents’ characteristics based on the categories of the innovation adopters. There are 11 significant variables and four respondents’ clusters: innovators, early majority, late majority, and the uncategorized one. Moreover, Twitter data analytics are utilized to investigate the information engagement coefficient based on the agents’ location. The agents’ characteristics which eme...

This paper is written as part of the research on information and communication technology (ICT) innovation cluster in West Java, Indonesia. Analysis on the firm's innovation capability including its factors will be elaborated and followed by the discussion on firm's business performance. The relationship of firm's innovation capability and business performance will be discussed while considering the effect of clusters in terms of cluster's effect as a value chain cluster, as a coopetition cluster and as a resource-shared cluster. Cluster is hypothesized to have moderating effect on the relationship between firm's innovation capability and business performance.Conceptual framework from this paper will be used at preliminary stage of the research on ICT innovation cluster that can be expected to contribute into the development of ICT cluster in West Java in particular and Indonesia in general. To support innovative start-ups, effective venture capital (VC) markets, as an alternative to conventional financing intermediaries, have shown to play an important role beyond its financing function. We review the successful experience of the VC market in the U.S. and the contrasting experiences of replications around the world. This essay also describes some empirical evidences of how effective commonly applied policy approaches have been in the development of active VC markets. Most of the studies about VC have focus on the key advising and consulting role of private VC firms. Therefore, we would like to elaborate the role of public VC and put emphasis on the complementary role of public VC companies. The difference of the objective between public and private VC will also be explored, hence “who-does-what” in supporting innovative entrepreneurship will be clear.

The research will take advantage of a newly established Entrepreneurship program study at School of Business and Management, Institute of Technology Bandung (SBM-ITB). The longitudinal data from a survey would be collected from the students in Entrepreneurship program at the beginning and at the end of their study. SBM-ITB also has a long established Management program study which offers some entrepreneurship courses/programs in several semesters. As a comparison, the same survey would be applied to the students in Management program at the same cohort. Study to these different types of entrepreneurship education (Entrepreneurship vs Management program study) seems to give different result in terms of the impact on entrepreneurial self-efficacy and intentions of students. The result is expected to be two fold. First is to understand the impact of entrepreneurship education on students’ ESE and EI; second is to have a comparison with the ‘sister’ program of Management and see whether the entrepreneurship education in Entrepreneurship program study do make a significant difference in terms of the impact on students’ ESE and IE. The results are expected to provide a valuable contribution to entrepreneurship literature in terms of the comparison of the impact of two different schemes of entrepreneurship education to students’ ESE and EI and also for improvement in the entrepreneurship education not only in SBM-ITB but also in general.

It is started with patent as appropriability mechanism and patent counts as the innovation output indicator, followed by discussion why there are problems by taking it as a measure of innovation. The motivation of firms for patenting is elaborated in which there are strategic motives for patenting for firms beyond traditional protecting motive from imitation. The different motives for patenting among firms with different type of technology and the relative importance of patents for appropriating their innovation as well as a phenomenon called “patent paradox” are further discussed. I look into the literatures about the definition of patenting strategy of firms and how the strategies in patenting are different across technological knowledge and industries. Furthermore, I delve further into the role of firm size in patenting strategy. Some empirical researches suggest that there is a positive relationship between firm size and patent propensities. The discussion will be finalized by looking at the patenting strategies of firms in developing countries. Beside the fact that there are very few studies covering developing countries, some scholars suggest that there are specific factors that need special attention.

Where the company moves into new segment, it applies its conventional internally-oriented approach to its innovation and new product development and as a consequence, it faces problems in terms of delay of time to market and increasing costs. The development of composite manifold is taken as an illustrative case of the problem that the company is facing. As indicated by the case, the company is trapped in a “one-size-fits-all” approach in its innovation and new product development process. The paper is developed through the use of primary research in the form of in-depth interview and case-study discussions with innovation managers, program managers and marketing managers in the company’s headquarters (Netherlands) and other European countries, and secondary research in the form of company data analysis and extensive literature review. Frameworks of newness and risk map as well as the corresponding scoring systems is elaborated and developed to increase the efficiency and effectiveness in the company’s NPD.
