It is known in the field of design, that when a project comes
to shape, an emotional value of the designer or the team of designers
that put together all the elements for the project to be born, it is and
will be always something that artificiality and industry will never
be able to meet. Imagine for a moment that even before the project
comes as an idea, the designer is able to create a material that may
be the perfect match for that idea to arise into a project. This
pictorial is presented as a way to evidence the valuable contribute
that material experience through the concept of Do-It-Yourself
Materials is providing nowadays to designer’s research. It is an
approach to understand what is happening when everything starts
with the material in mind before the project. By a meticulous

Do-It-Yourself Materials are presented to elucidate the importance
of the meaning that the designer provides when, as an alchemist
gains control of the material through interacting with it, how that
meaning is carried within the material and therefore can be
transferred to the project subsequently throughout an established
vision.

This paper presents the growing phenomena of self-produced materials, namely 'Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Materials', and illustrates the pattern of conditions and circumstances which led to the emergence of this approach to materials. The DIY Materials phenomena is derived from a broader concept defined as 'emerging materials experiences' and through their definition we think in new and meaningful interaction between users and these new materials qualities derived by a self-production process. Through the presentation of a case study, NeWool, a bio composite made of starch and wool fibres, we outline a design practice based on direct experimentation, tinkering and envisioning for designer. Abstract DIY Materials, Materials Experience, bio-based materials, natural fibers composites, self-production.

As part of a research about the relationship between time
and design through the topic of materials and processes, this paper
presents experimentation on a novel material. New materials are
emerging through a Do-It-Yourself approach encouraged by Open
source behaviors and trans-disciplinary design. These materials
become representative of new values, aesthetics and dynamics,
which lead to an emotional bonding with the user and the designer.
The need of applying a method suitable for the design of these
materials is emerging. New tools for selecting, exploring and
designing materials based on experience, senses and emotion are
starting to be available and applied. Mycelium-based DIY material
have a strong potential and might be a perfect candidate to
experiment with an experience-based method, that is the Material
Driven Design method. Through this method a material experience
related to the passing of time and consistent with the material
qualities and characteristics was developed. Combining a novel
material with a novel method might lead to development both on the
material and on the method itself.

The language of products that we shape today is influenced mainly by the way manufacturing processes let us do things. The more flexible a process becomes, the broader shapes we can produce. This paper aims to document an experimentation process held at the Los
Andes University as a different approach to teach that topic to designers. By this mean, a chance of empowerment is given to students with the possibility to reshape the way things are produced. Understanding the basic configuration of the industry in a different way may open further possibilities to create better products in the near future.

This paper presents a study on the geometrical interaction of the subsystems of a vehicle under development.
It starts from the design requirements, imposed in this case by
the operation of an off-road vehicle driven on the colombian
terrains and powered by a hybrid powertrain.
Methods from industrial design and engineering were
combined in the study. The geometrical characteristics were
studied by considering their impact on different functional
requirements. As a result, a proposed geometrical configuration of the vehicle is presented. It was generated as a product of the proposed methodology.

By applying methods of creative thinking, material
selection, contemporary literature and first class databases,
this article presents two academic approaches from two Colombian universities to teach about materials & processes for Industrial design and Product design engineering. By empower the students to experiment and comprehend by perception the different attributes and properties of a material and its transforming processes, a collective learning is created aimed in the mid term innovate y products through materials.

As part of local availability of materials and processes research, this paper presents experimentation with methods to teach designers about materials. State of the art tools, technical
and graphic literature and workshops are combined to place designers in an environment, which facilitates direct physical contact with materials. This allows students to understand the
technical, mechanical and physical properties of materials, while easily comprehending their aesthetic and sensory attributes, and behaviour. In most cases, such experimentation leads to
unconventional and ground-breaking solutions, which are different to what the industry commonly produces. Close interaction with materials and their in-depth understanding opens new directions, which inspire designers to create new product languages.

Design and architecture must understand materials as tools to undertake ethical projects both for society and ecosystems. This paper sets out a creative and contemplative idea of what materials provide. Designers and architects can experiment with these materials’ use and current applications,
and in turn explore the limit of these applications in order to be innovative.
This new idea of materials must be considered from a local point of view.
