Under the influence of globalization and state integration processes, the importance of a border as a barrier is gradually decreasing. Borderlands are still perceived as specific phenomena, however, not only in terms of historical development but especially in the context of their changing impact on the daily lives of their inhabitants. Along with EU enlargement, the de-bordering process has also become significant in many countries where the borderland played an important role in the past. These include the V4 countries, whose borderlands are the object of this research. In this article we analyze these areas on the basis of selected socio-economic indicators, with a focus on change in the period 2001–2011. As indicated by the Analysis of Variance, the results show the significantly differentiated development of the borderlands, in terms of the individual values of indicators both within the borderland of the EU member states, as well as along the external border of the EU.

In recent years, the TopoJSON format in cooperation with the d3.js (D3) library has found an increasingly extensive application in the field of visualization of geographic data on the Internet. The possibilities of application are very broad and in practice new applications developed on the basis of this library are created on a daily basis. The purpose of the submitted paper is to explain the D3 library and the TopoJSON format to the geographic community for whom their use means a strong tool for the displaying of spatial data on the Internet. The paper deals with the issue of geocoding and its use based on specific geocoding mechanisms implemented in geoinformation tools, applied in a case study of geocoded spatial units (communes) in Slovakia in a selected region (Liptov). Except the detailed procedure that addresses geocoding using Google Geocoding API, it also provides the analysis of the results of obtained pointed locations through the procedure of defined central reference points (centroids) based on the GIS MapInfo Professional. Pointed localised communes, obtained in geocoding process, are subsequently compared with the official state registry of definitional points of Slovak communes. Different quality of the results is compared using the distance analyses (buffering) applied to selected elements of the road network (highways and roads of first and second class) with subsequent evaluation of the distribution of population in the selected region according these distance zones. Abstrakt Okamžitá dostupnosť priestorových údajov v reálnom čase je v súčasnej dobe, dynamicky sa rozvíjajúcich informačno-komunikačných technológií, nevyhnutnou súčasťou fungovania všetkých odvetví národného hospodárstva. Znalosť reálnych dát a ich následné zhodnotenie a spracovanie je veľmi dôležitým momentom úspechu či už súkromných firiem, národných korporácií ale aj samotných jednotlivcov, ktorí sa aktívne podieľajú na formovaní spoločnosti ako otvoreného systému. Two research objectives can be identified in the presented paper. The first one was the development of a point layer, which would abstract from the position of a central point depending on the shape of the territory of the respective spatial unit (commune), and would express the position of a commune as regards the location of the point in the area of the commune built-up area. For such purpose, a geocoding algorithm from Google was used, for which it was possible to prepare a final dot map layer without any terrain layout, as the geocoding algorithm processes only simple text addresses of the relevant spatial units. Such an obtained dot layer was compared with the layer of centroids and the achieved differences were visualised. The paper generally builds on the concept of justice in social science. It attempts to interpret this concept in a geographical and particularly in a spatial context. The paper uses the concept of accessibility to define the principle of spatial equity. The main objective of the paper is to propose an approach with which to assess the level of spatial equity in the administrative division of a territory. In order to fulfil this objective the paper theoretically discusses the concept of spatial equity and relates it to other relevant concepts, such as spatial efficiency.
