Rural areas, especially those with a specific position within the regional structure,
such as undoubtedly peripheral and marginal regions, are now in the spotlight of various dis -
ciplines – geography, demography, sociology, architecture, etc. Each of these disciplines uses
its own specific terminology and despite a number of general and commonly accepted terms,
more or less different understanding and consequent discrepancies in their interpretation may
occur. Even within geography itself, ambiguities of certain terms, e.g. periphery, marginality
can be seen as well. It is therefore our intention to highlight the problems associated with the
terminology and to clarify the meaning of the terms peripherality, marginality, from the perspective
of different authors, or even refer to a new concept, which could be applied in this
context. Based on the theoretical overview we try to present practical examples and studies related
to the identification of peripheral / marginal regions in Slovakia with an emphasis on
methodology and selected indicators.

Under the influence of globalization and state integration processes, the importance of a border as a barrier is gradually decreasing. Borderlands are still perceived as specific phenomena, however, not only in terms of historical development but especially in the context of their changing impact on the daily lives of their inhabitants. Along with EU enlargement, the de-bordering process has also become significant in many countries where the borderland played an important role in the past. These include the V4 countries, whose borderlands are the object of this research. In this article we analyze these areas on the basis of selected socio-economic indicators, with a focus on change in the period 2001–2011. As indicated by the Analysis of Variance, the results show the significantly differentiated development of the borderlands, in terms of the individual values of indicators both within the borderland of the EU member states, as well as along the external border of the EU.

Electoral behavior is one of the central issues in the context of geography of elections which is currently considered to be an established subdiscipline of geography. Unlike traditional literature in this study we look at electoral behavior through a different perspective. Our attention is drawn to and out what is position of marginal rural areas in terms of electoral behavior. This research is carried out through a case study of Eastern Slovakia, which in the existing territorial structure and spatial polarization of Slovakia, represents an area with significant occurence of marginal communes. Thus, we aim to focus on selected aspects of marginality that might be perphaps transformed into a pattern of specic electoral behavior
and analyze what is happening with the electoral preferences and participation if the area is considered to be marginal. Moreover, we attempt to answer the question whether and to
what extent certain relations between the above mentioned aspects can be identified.
