In this paper we want to contribute to the debate by exploring perceptions of the importance of functions of agriculture from two perspectives, the farmers ’ and the general public’s point of view. We draw on a data set of representative surveys of mountain farmers (n=343) and of the general public (n=1020) in South Tyrol. The surveys were carried out in 2005. Three research objectives are pursued in this paper: (i) to reveal the differences in perceptions of the importance of specified non-commodity functions of agriculture between mountain farmers and the general public in South Tyrol; (ii) to present differences in the cultural background of the general public’s perceptions of these functions; and (iii) to describe the South Tyrolean public opinion towards the question, whether mountain farmers in South Tyrol should be paid additional public money ...

Design/methodology/approach This study relies on data gathered in a quasi-experiment to analyze differences in consumption patterns at resort bars over a two-year period (summer 2018 and 2019) before and after the introduction of an all-inclusive soft drinks package. Findings The findings inform on bundling strategies according to different degrees of price consciousness and resort category. In particular, guests in upscale resorts are more likely to under-consume items included in a pre-paid bundle and significantly engage in additional spending than economy resort guests. Originality/value The quasi-experiment provides the actual in-destination consumption patterns and off...

A quantitative questionnaire was developed and administered to tourists in Riva del Garda, Italy. An importance-performance analysis, a principal component analysis and a structural equation model have been developed. Findings reveal that the preservation of local resources is a critical area that needs to be improved. Results also show that even if the quality and preservation of destination’s resources are primary issues for tourists, only quality affects their satisfaction and intention to return to Lake Garda. However, quality and preservation are not disconnected constructs, as the quality of destination’s resources in the mid- and long-term is affected by their preservation. Lake Garda due to the richness and diversity of its natural and historical heritage is in a strong competitive position. The challenge for destination managers is to connect tourists to its history, people and culture, while at the same time preserving the local environment.
