The focus of the article is on the older adults, a population group that is considered as a vulnerable, from the social and health perspectives. The objective of the study was to examine whether arts have a positive impact on older adults or not. By examining the impact of various kinds of arts on the quality of life of older adults, this article aims to strengthen the idea of using alternative approaches in social work interventions with older adults. It also suggests the idea of introducing social work courses within the curriculum that combine social work and arts. Through a pen-and-paper, closed-ended questionnaire, 179 Greek Cypriots over the age of 65 were surveyed in order to measure the power that participation in art activities may have on their lives.

Cyprus presents a very interesting, yet under-explored, case study as it remains an island de facto divided. The division has resulted in the physical and political separation of the two most populous ethnic communities (Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots) for over 50 years. This article offers an exploration of the views of social workers on both sides. Through a quantitative approach, participants in the study were able to express their thoughts and beliefs on the ‘other’ and on social work in a post-conflict environment.

In order to provide a comprehensive view the study begins with the arrival of the British in Cyprus in 1878 after 300 years of Ottoman occupation. This study includes an analysis of the labour movement which spearheaded the campaign for the introduction of social insurance. Both the labour movement and the British colonists are considered as significant players in the story of introducing social insurance in Cyprus. The labour movement acted as a source of pressure in its campaign for improved social welfare whilst the British created as many obstacles as possible against such a development. In addition, the study illustrates the social conditions of the general population but with particular emphasis on the older population, the group most affected by a lack of social insurance. This emphasis includes a detailed study and analysis of the role o...

The course of this journey continued despite various obstacles set by the colonial government, employers and especially the foreign companies that were running/exploiting the mining industry on the island.

This chapter considers and explores the foundations of the British colonial era. The events during the first years of the British governance of the island are of particular importance since they identify and highlight the social conditions of the Cypriot people and relate to subsequent developments in social insurance.

Although there had been some economic progress with some commerce, mainly exports of agricultural products (i.e. olives, carobs), the living conditions for the mass of the population remained extremely poor. This was due not only to the maintenance of heavy taxation and the tribute, as explained in the previous chapter, which had removed a huge amount of money from the local economy but also to the fact that there was no form of state intervention in terms of social support, education, health care or social insurance.

When these types of feelings are combined with certain life events or situations, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns, they often lead to mounting tension and stress. A crisis is a disruption or breakdown in a person’s or a family’s normal or usual pattern of functioning. The aims and objectives of this study are to explore how lockdown and social distancing had an impact on family relations in Cyprus and to what extent affected stress level of participants. By examining the impact of social distancing among adults 18 and older (N = 160), valuable conclusions were extracted. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to strengthen the idea of using alternative approaches in social preventions and/or interventions in crisis in order to deal with stress. The study argues that the disruption of usual patterns of functioning, in addition to other psychosocial and economic factors, diminishes the q...

Social service professionals were asked whether and how they experienced the current economic crisis in their work. The aim of the study was to examine whether the recent economic crisis in Cyprus was a predictor for stress. This article has no intention of examining stress per se, but rather the general consequences for professionals working in governmental and non-governmental social service organizations. The purpose of the study is to examine whether the current financial crisis in Cyprus has affected the work of social service professionals. The participants in our study included social workers, psychologists and sociologists, as well as administrative staff from governmental and non-governmental social service agencies and volunteer organizations. The aims and objectives of this article are to present the first survey ever conducted in Cyprus ... more The aims and objectives of this article are to present the first survey ever conducted in Cyprus of the views and perceptions that Cypriots have of old age. In particular, the researchers, Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot social workers, wanted to explore the issue of ageism within the two Cypriot communities, the Greek-Cypriot (Greek-speaking) and the Turkish-Cypriot (Turkish-speaking) populations. Against all odds, the two social workers, one from each community, began collaborating towards the exploration and comparison of social issues in the two Cypriot ethnic communities. Because the two communities have been forced to live separately since 1974, researchers aimed to investigate whether this long separation affected their views on old age. The study was also run online, and the survey was designed with the use of Google Forms. Although the results of the study are not significantly different between the two communities, the current survey explores the preservation of common c...

We find that the elderly living in their own home are significantly happier than the elderly living in nursing homes. On the basis of these findings, we propose that the role of social workers could be valuable regarding happiness of older Cypriots. Within the frame of the current results, we have identified a lack of alternative housing options in Cyprus that would combine home environment with adequate health and social care for older people.

Many people all over the world are prepared to risk arduous land journeys and dangerous sea cross... more Many people all over the world are prepared to risk arduous land journeys and dangerous sea crossings to escape persecution or conflict for the chance of a new and safe start in a new country. EU has received vast numbers of displaced populations, mainly from Middle East and Africa due to political changes and wars. The continuous Syrian conflict refueled the number of applicants for the case of Cyprus. Asylum seekers’ applications as of June 2017 are estimated to be around 3000+. Nevertheless, any improvements on the legislative and integration policies, the population of asylum seekers still experiences several daily difficulties. For example, difficulties are noticed in accommodation (limited available space in reception centre or other forms provided by local councils), education (adult learning, language), social services (benefits and care), regeneration (training, employment, financial exclusion), health (access to medical services) and finally but most importantly low access to labour market. These conditions triggered the initiation of a research study sponsored by UNHCR Cyprus which focused on determining their living conditions. The overall aim was to develop a roadmap for both the government and policy makers to introduce effective and realistic policy measures for better integration outcomes. The empirical part used a mixed research method to gather reliable and valid data. 500+ questionnaires were collected to identify the living conditions of adult asylum seekers and reflect their views about the degree of reformation needed; a systematic random sampling approach was applied to ensure research validity. Qualitative semi-structured interviews (82) were conducted to collect the views of professionals and representatives of organizations involved in the implementation and monitoring of the asylum and integration process as well as of a sample of asylum seekers. On the one hand, the group of asylum seekers expressed their disappointment and anger towards the public services, for delays and the poverty status they are living in, while they acknowledged the role of individual professionals and NGOs to help them. Non-existed programmes for education and employment were the most identified difficulties they face. The current voucher system was also heavily critisised as inefficient and unresponsive. Finally, differences were noticed about the level of integration and interaction with the local communities. On the other hand, the professionals, while they identified several multi-layered consequences for the local society, stated the absence of national coherent integration policy and collaboration among the public, voluntary and private sector. They highlighted specific social and organisational challenges which hinder its further development such as the lack of sustainable integration policies along to the need of suggested of specific educational, housing, employment and integration measures for the State to follow such as quick, fair, and accurate processing of asylum requests, early integration measures, effective provision of information, strong incentives and sanctions to participate in the workforce, thoughtful location choices, obligatory acquisition of the host country language and many more. However, that is only the first step in a multifaceted and years-long process of integrating them into society—a responsibility that social workers have also to undertake..
