A contribution to the knowledge of the Shawbak territorial settlement in the longue duree This paper presents some preliminary results about systematic Light Archaeology surveys (integrating Building and Landscape Archaeology) that the author is leading in the village of Al-Jāyyah, SE ofthe Shawbak castle, within the archaeological investigations on the landscape surrounding the fortress managed by the Italian archaeological Mission‘Medieval Petra,’ University of Florence. The aim of the surveys is to investigate the historical connection between the castle and the village, suggested by some Medieval written sources. The research’s preliminary outcomes are confirming that even if the present appearance of the village is modern, it preserves significant Medieval material evidences plausibly linked to the Crusader suburb and the Islamic madīnah of Shawbak.

The vault of the choir was completely filled by a very important numbers of potteries, which is very interesting building technique. To document this technique a complete photogrammetric survey was realized, layer by layer, following underwater archaeology system. It is interesting to note that in underwater archaeology such a case is quite rare, in fact or the wreck is in shallow water and the digging can be made (but this case is now unrealistic because in shallow water all the wreck have been stolen – or already excavated by archaeologist – !) or we are in deep water, with well conserved wreck but the depth doesn’t allow the excavation.

The Italian archaeological Mission “Medieval Petra” of the University of Florence has been operat... more The Italian archaeological Mission “Medieval Petra” of the University of Florence has been operating in Jordan for over thirty years and since 2000 is systematically investigating aspects of material life of the Shawbak castle. In 2010 the archaeologists of the Mission started to surveying the villages around it (Abū Makhțūb, Al-Juhayyir, Al-Maquairia, A-Mansura, Al-Jāyyah, Bir_Khidad, Shammākh and Șīhān), developing “The Shawbak Tourist Masterplan”, partly funded by the European Union, with the aim to study and make know the traditional and archaeological potential of the area, a real cultural landscape. The paper presents some preliminary results of the archaeological investigations on the rural village of Al-Jāyyah, that is located about 1 Km S/E of the castle of Shawbak and consists of about forty vernacular houses, almost deserted at the present day. Since 2016 the author has been focusing on intensive surveys in Al-Jāyyah with a structured program of Light Archeology − a non-invasive analysis system that integrates Landscape Archaeology with Stratigraphy of Upstanding Structures methodologies −, because its historical connection with the castle. Even if the main features of the village belong to Ottoman period, in fact, written and archaeological clues are confirming that the village preserve many and significant material evidences of ‘Medieval’ period, from the ruins of the Ayyubid town of Shawbak, built by the heirs of Saladin around 1190s, to the Mamluks. From 2016 to 2018 we recorded, with a specific documentation system, about the 70% of the architectural complexes of the village, documenting several examples of vernacular rural architecture (the so-called “fellahin houses”) but also a considerable number of reused architectural elements and some portions of preexisting buildings that belong to ‘Medieval’ period. The pre-Ottoman presences, in fact, appear to be widespread throughout the area of the village, although with different degrees of preservation. Thanks to this detailed and systematic documentation system, the surveys of all the architectural and environmental characteristics of Al-Jāyyah are providing information about the evolution of the village over time related to exploitation of environmental resources, about the distribution analysis of the cadastral and architectural patterns in its relationships with the pre-existing structures, including the castle, contributing to understand the evolution of the Shawbak settlement in the longue durée.

Written and archaeological clues, in facts, allow to plausibly hypothesize that the villages could preserve important material evidence of Medieval period: especially Al-Jāyyah could be related to the ruins of the Ayyubid town of Shawbak, built by the heirs of Saladin around 1190s. So the Italian archaeological Mission "Medieval Petra" is carrying on a systematic study of the villages since 2010, in the occasion of the "Shawbak Tourist Masterplan" project, developed with the Municipality of Shawbak and partly funded by European Union (2010-2015). In the last two archaeological campaigns the investigations focused on implementing the geographical documentation, starting from geo-referencing some important landmarks of the surroundings: hotels, restaurants, mosques, springs, monuments ecc. Moreover we are working on the systematic analysis of the housing complexes of the Al-Jāyyah village and, accordingly to the methodologies of Light Archeology, we are documenting every buildings, from their typological and topographical features to their building techniques. The study of the historical landscape of Shawbak is important both for better understanding the diachronic settlement dynamics related to the castle and to develop a sustainable tourist communication strategies, for respecting the cultural and social peculiarities of this area.
