Daniel N. Stern’s research on the first years of life offers the view of an active newborn, developing in a continuous dialogue with the Other. The mother places the infant feelings at the center of her attention. The infant gets in tune with the mother, and learns that she welcomes and understands his inner states. Such attunement is a primary holistic experience, taking place because of the infant innate ability to perceive the “interpersonal happenings” as a unitary Gestalt, emerging “from the theoretically separate experiences of movement, force, time, space and intention”. Large convergence exists between Daniel Stern’s developmental psychology and Gestalt theory: both view the infant development occurring within an inter-subjective matrix, not as a process with phases or stages, but rather as a progressive organization of structures.

This paper presents experimental research on the infant's encounter with his or her mirror image from a Gestalt theoretical perspective. This perspective is characterized by the fact that it places the numerous individual findings in the overall context of infant development of the toddler. It is thus able to show in which manifold, mutually interacting processes the child's self is differentiated in a multi-directional dialogical development. What it takes in the development of the infant to recognize its image as a correspondence of itself and to raise this knowledge to self-awareness, and what role the dialogical relationship plays in this process, above all with the most important attachment figures, but also with strangers, offers much food for thought about the prerequisites for the development of self-knowledge and self-awareness also in adulthood - and also in psychotherapy.

At the beginning two scenes from literature are quoted in which two partners are in intimate relationship with each other. The tender atmosphere is experienced as a gift. In the second part, an attempt is made to shed light on the conditions under which tenderness becomes possible. These are social and personal factors. The forms of relationship between the partners are decisive here. Tenderness is favored by a form of parity in their relationship with each other, which also concerns the elementary aspects of life, the shared humanity. Moreover, to promote tenderness, each partner must respect the rhythms of the other, trying to harmonize his own rhythms with those of the other. What does the comparison between the tender partner behavior described by the poets and the behavior described in children's research as "affective tuning" between infant and mother show? In the attached interview, Anna Arfelli Galli describes the results of research by Daniel Stern and his colleagues on the relationship between mother and child. In the interactions of social play, a surprisingly precise temporal coordination between mother and child is repeated regardless of its modalities. This agreement develops in the field of vocalization in the two modalities of alternation or co-action. The two modalities of communication (alternation/co-action) are not limited to the dyad mother-child, otherwise they are maintained throughout life. In the scenes described at the beginning we have both alternation and co-actional interactions that follow each other.

Summary:
This article (in German language) presents some of the main results of Daniel N. Stern's infant and toddler research. His findings and conclusions show a high agreement with Gestalt theoretical positions. From the observation of the interactions of infants with their mothers Stern has demonstrated above all the relationship character of the event. He also supplemented and modified a number of findings and conclusions that had previously been presented by attachment research. For example, attachment behaviour cannot really be understood without understanding the motivation for this behaviour - the need for belonging. Stern works in a differentiated way on the modalities and behaviors that can be used prelingually or without the use of language to build, hold, and regulate relationships. This alone can provide a variety of stimuli for relationships in psychotherapy, whether with children or with adults. The patient is not the individual, but the relationship that this person has with others.

Gestalt theoretical developmental psychology has always seen the infant as an active being. Current research findings support this view. In addition, they show that the investigations of the mother-child dyad, as they were common in classical attachment research, represent only a part of the child's relationship experiences. In fact, attachment behavior is organized within a much more comprehensive process, the development of interpersonal communication. Already at the age of three months the child is active in a triadic (tripartite) field. It perceives not only a single counterpart, but also the characteristics of the interactions in the parental subsystem.

The Finnish Gestalt psychologist Kaila describes in his experimental work the development of the recognition of the human face by an infant in its second trimester of life. Kaila’s work characterizes itself by a precise definition of constructs, by being diligently phenomenological, and with those prerequisites coherent, analysis of the observed behavior and by the continuous observation of the overall situation.
Changing the modalities of the presentation of an adult’s face, firstly, Kaila was able to prove for the first time that the attention of a 3-months infant is drawn to the area around the eyes of an adult and, secondly, he documented the transition from pseudo-imitation to real imitation.

A baby is born. How does it become a person? In her contribution, Anna Arfelli Galli presents Gestalt theoretical research work and findings on the emergence of the person from a developmental psychological perspective. The spectrum ranges from Kurt Lewin's early investigations into the expressive behaviour of small children, Wolfgang Metzger's observations on foster behaviour and the efforts of adults to interpret child behaviour, to research by Richard Meili and his colleagues in Switzerland and by Wolfgang Metzger's colleagues in Münster, which is still remarkable today. Differences to the perspective of today's attachment-theoretical research are also worked out, which are mostly centered one-sidedly on the mother's response to the needs of the infant and neglect the active part of the infant. However, personality theoretical approaches are also critically commented on, which do not take into account the personality of the infant. The importance of original characteristics already developed in the first year of life is emphasized in contrast. The final part is the Gestalt psychological research on early childhood defiance and the willingness of infants to do it themselves. The hypothesis is based on this that the toddler first gradually develops a minimal, implicit form of consciousness and the separation of the ego from the other.

This project offers a consideration regarding the teaching methodology adopted in the Communication Training Workshop course in the first year of study at the Educational Faculty of the University of Macerata/Italy. The Workshop aims to train students to reflect about the intuitive knowledge they use when they describe photos projected in the classroom. This exercise focuses on the interdependence of the processes that in usual practice we describe as observing, describing and interpreting.

The Gestalt psychology movement has contributed to developmental psychology since its beginnings,... more The Gestalt psychology movement has contributed to developmental psychology since its beginnings, but its contribution to developmental problems has taken on a decisive progress with the epistemological considerations by Kurt LEWIN (1926, 1927, 1931a, 1931b) and the shift from the study of perception and thought to the study of behavior. In 1926 the series Untersuchungen zur Handlungs-und Affektpsychologie began to appear in the Psychologische Forschung. In this series, behavior is analyzed considering the global situation in which the subject is acting. Within the series, LEWIN and collaborators developed a number of fundamental constructs to describe and interpret the subject's behavior. Most studies were focused on adults, but in 1933 the series published two works by Sara FAJANS on the variations of the valence in relation to the distance of objects in children aged between 0 and 6 years. In the following years, the field-approach developed by LEWIN has provided significant contributions to developmental psychology with the works of the GOTTSCHALDT school in Berlin, of the MEILI school in Bern and of the METZGER school in Münster. Under Wolfgang METZGER's guidance, developmental psychology has found a rather peculiar space in the Münster school; the analysis of child behavior was developed, increasing the understanding of the development of personality, with remarkable educational and didactic repercussions. In this last context the wide range of contributions is documented by a synthesis by METZGER (1971). Here, I will focus on works by Lilly KEMMLER (1957), KLAMMA (1957) and Heinz HECKHAUSEN (et al. 1962, 1963a, 1963b, 1964, et al. 1965)-all METZGER pupils - which have particular relevance as examples of research on the development of the personality based on the field-approach. Their focus is on the articulation of the psychological field in the interval between 1;6 and 6 years, from the appearance of the first negativism conducts and the will of "doing-it-alone", to the achievement motivation, and the appearance of a true level of aspiration. Reintroducing these studies acknowledges the contribution given by their authors to the Gestalt school of developmental psychology; however, the value of these researches is not merely historical, because their contribution to the understanding of the early phases of self-knowledge and of achievement-motivated-behavior is still relevant today. These studies show that the LEWINian approach is an ideal tool to identify the dynamic underlying a behavior, even when an effective inter-subjective exchange is impossible.

On the cognitive side we must consider that this knowledge is part of the construction of the correspondence between objects encountered in real space and object-images.
Meetings in virtual space: Knowing your own reflected image is also a way to know the virtual space. On the communicative side, the discovery of the visual aspect of oneself, in particular of the expressiveness of one's own face, which, among other things, refers to the interiority, requires to reckon with an expressiveness divergent from that of the experiences with the partner and is an indispensable prerequisite for to know each other like other than their partners. Finally, on the relational side, the new level of separation/detection with the significant adult attested from the opposition reactions, marks the transition from the exercise of separation to the awareness of separation. The level of awareness that derives from the organization of these experiences in a coherent whole can be identified with the appearance of consciousness of one's own individuality (Besonderheitsbewusstsein) of general psychology. Of course a consciousness in progress, as all areas considered here, from the your image in the mirror, in real space, in virtual space.

The book is dedicated to the study of phenomenal subjectivity in a multidisciplinary perspective. Starting from the observation that the theorists of the School of Gestalt have devoted themselves mainly to phenomenal objectivity, the author's research highlights the need to integrate methodologies of different disciplines to study the relationship interpersonal structure as a dialogue structure, taking into account the roles that people have in the global field, the Io-We relationship and the theories referred to, while respecting the anthropological models and methodological principles of Gestalt.

Books by Anna Arfelli Galli
The book is dedicated to the study of phenomenal subjectivity in a multidisciplinary perspective. Starting from the observation that the theorists of the School of Gestalt have devoted themselves mainly to phenomenal objectivity, the author's research highlights the need to integrate methodologies of different disciplines to study the relationship interpersonal structure as a dialogue structure, taking into account the roles that people have in the global field, the Io-We relationship and the theories referred to, while respecting the anthropological models and methodological principles of Gestalt.
For the study of the first year of life, Sander, Stern, and Gomez each chose the adult–infant relationship as the unit of analysis; they followed its development, respectively, in moments of meeting, in the proto-conversation and in the focus of attention. The authors explicitly refer to Gestalt theory and support the need to interpret the behavior of the child as part of a wider context, as the experiences of a person in relation (Galli, 2010) since birth.
