Though the Hucpoldings have not received extensive treatment in previous anglophone scholarship, they had a key influence in much of what was happening in this period. Manarini’s groundbreaking study highlights the dramatic geopolitical changes surrounding this kinship group in the kingdom of Italy across three crucial centuries. The research reconstructs political events associated with every identifiable member of the kinship, as well as inquiring into their patrimony and their networks of relationships and patronage. Finally, it examines the distinctive characteristics of the group to gain a clearer picture of the nature of their power, their memory strategies and the shared perceptions and self-awareness of group members.

The papers introduced here consider a wide range of contacts and exchange from the diplomatic encounters of late antique Byzantium via the exchange of (religious) ideas and spiritual objects in Italy and the Near East to the fundamental mobility of capital, slaves and goods. Rather than reveal a static, ossified and self-contained range of landscapes, this article will argue that there were not only cross-cultural, religious and political contacts but also economic and social connections that fused the Medieval Mediterranean into a heterogenous contact zone of cultures, ideas and products. Using this broader framework of the Mediterranean as a contact zone and border region between and across the longue durée represented by the period from Late Antiquity until the end of the twelfth century allows the contributions to demonstrate movement, not stasis after Rome and the expansion of horizons rather than their restriction.

Pope Sylvester I (314-335) became an important figure in the political history of early medieval ... more Pope Sylvester I (314-335) became an important figure in the political history of early medieval Italy. His legendary relationship with Constantine I (306-337), the first Christian emperor, played a significant role in establishing his ideological prominence. Declared a saint of the early Roman Church, Sylvester’s relics did not gain much attention until the middle of the eighth century, when they became a source of competition. On the one hand, Roman popes venerated his body in the monastery of St Stephen and St Sylvester, founded by Pope Paul I around 760 inside the Eternal City; on the other hand, the Lombard king Aistulf and his brother-in-law, Abbot Anselm, claimed to have brought Sylvester’s relics north, in order to have them buried in Anselm’s newly founded monastery of Nonantola in the Po Valley. Scholars would appear to have overlooked this major issue when investigating the relation- ship between Lombard elite society and Roman popes in the eighth century. This article will therefore consider the dates, forms, and narratives of the translatio of St Sylvester in order to evaluate Nonantola’s political and ideological involvement in this »holy« movement. The main argument is that through the »journey« of Sylvester’s relics within the Lombard kingdom, King Aistulf was able to increase his prestige and political influence. For its part, Nonantola rewrote the history of its origins by centring it on the relics of the Constantinian pontiff and those of Pope Hadrian I, in order to claim political and spiritual primacy through- out the medieval period.

Particular attention is paid to the career of Boniface of the Hucpoldings: an Italian aristocrat who attained prominence thanks to his close relationship with Rudolf. The Hucpoldings belonged to the aristocratic elite of the Carolingian empire, came to Italy under Lothar I (c.847) and tried to settle there. Until now, scholars have underestimated their role in the wider context of the early medieval Italian kingdom. This study will stress how Boniface's career was a turning point in the lineage's development, and how his political achievements were essential for his kinship's further hegemony.

The analysis sets out from the highly fragmented post-Roman territorial context and from the efforts made by Lombard kings, which were mostly directed to- wards the fiscal estate of Cittanova, rather than the ancient Roman civitas of Mutina. Particular attention is paid to the figure of Bishop Leodoin and to the manuscripts attributed to him in the Chapter Library, especially the famous Codex legum (O.I.2), for which a different production context is suggested, prior to its acquisition by the Church of Modena.

The works of two important bishop of regnum Italiae in tenth century, Attone of Vercelli and Liut... more The works of two important bishop of regnum Italiae in tenth century, Attone of Vercelli and Liutprando of Cremona, witness the perception of educated and powerful people about the coeval leading aristocracy and the situation of the kingdom of Italy. Also because of these sources, the Perpendiculum and the Antapodosis, traditional storiography assumed this century as a time of increasing violence, war, distruction and desolation – it has known as ‘the iron century’ - after the collapse of Charlemagne’s construction.
It is useful to investigate if the meaning of words was a true mirror of reality or instead a perception, a will of change or just disappointment for the past gone. Moreover, this analysis could bring a much better glimpse on the aristocracy of the period, on the family and political bonds and how they dealt with the crown and foreign kings.
Focus of this work will be to show that even if the perspective of those authors is completely negative and hostile towards the contemporary leading society, responsable hearing them for the present kingdom’s desolation, it can be proved that exponent of the élites had real and planned political and dynastical project. Absolutely relevant is that some of those would finally achieve the pourpose in ways and sketching out schemes totally different and new compared to the past.

An interesting case of study in Carolingian Italy is the conflict between the aristocratic groups of the Hucpoldings and the Supponids. They competed for a major role at Louis II's royal court, but also in the local context of the Aemilia region. A peculiar narration of this conflict has survived, included in the ‘so called’ Epitome chronicorum Casinensium: a complex text that belongs to the Cassinese tradition. At the end of the composition, we read about a tale of cupidity, violence, and iniquity that took place at Louis II's court between Count Palatine Hucpold and Empress Angelberga. Although a product of imagination, we can grant some plausibility when we focus on the inner meaning of this vivid representation. The study will examine both levels of the tale. It will consider the literary layer paying attention to any topos used, their sources, and how and why they had been employed. The second level will consider what can we deduce from this tale, grounding on our knowledge of Louis II's reign and especially on the political situation of these two relevant aristocratic kinships. Coming from the Hucpoldings' point of view, the tale is, therefore, an outstanding statement of how Hucpold's descendants wanted to represent and remember the first period of their kinship in Italy when they managed to settle their power.

Scholars seem to have left this major issue aside while investigating the relationship between Lombard elite society and Roman Popes in the 8th century. The aim of my paper is then to consider timing, procedures and narrations of the translatio of St Sylvester in order to evaluate political and ideological involvements of this ‘holy’ movement on Nonantola’s side.
This paper will evaluate some particular texts copied in Nonantola’s Acta Sanctorum codex about the relations occurred between Carolingians and Rome before the fall of Lombard Italy, from the abbey’s point of view. I will investigate how Carolingian culture and conscience interacted – and at some level obscured – with the monastic community’s native Lombard background. I will try to determine if the political pattern followed by the abbey as a part of the Carolingian Empire had also a cultural influence on monks, and how that changed their representation of history, if not the very story of Nonantola’s foundation.
The abbey of Nonantola was a key point of the Lombard and Carolingian power since it received and controlled a vast fiscal area towards the Exarchate of Ravenna. The project of the Lombard founders was followed by Charlemagne, Louis the Pious and Lothar, making St Sylvester abbey one of the most benefited institution of the kingdom. Things changed with Louis II and again after 888. However, the memory of Nonantola as a Carolingian centre of power represented an unavoidable entry in any Italian ruler’s agenda. On the other side, the same memory could be a vital card for the abbot to play in the political ground.
My paper will evaluate the political use of the Nonantola’s Carolingian past in both directions. Through public charters – that are diplomas and placita – I will investigate how kings of Italy interacted with the monastic community from the specific perspective of the use of Caroligian past and which role, thanks to their past Carolingian relationship, the monks were able to play in the political game of post-Carolingian Italy.
In this respect, the case of the see of Modena is really interesting. After suffering political disgregation in Lombard time, the Modena’s community suffered also the very close foundation of the monastery of St Sylvester of Nonantola: a regal foundation and a very strong competitor for resources, especially the fiscal ones. Only in the second half of the 9th century the situation began to change, when, during Louis II’s reign, the balance shifted gradually towards the city and in particular towards the bishop’s figure. Scholars have recognised as main author of this new orientation Leodoinus, bishop of Modena between 870 c. and c. 892.
The paper aims to focus on Leodoinus’ episcopate, his political and economic activities. The main interest will be to consider how he tried to strengthen his connection with both the king and his flock, and if the network he established and led proved to be effective in political and social terms. Together with charters and imperial diplomas, I will evaluate also the role played by the chapter library Leodoinus contributed to put together and also used to enforced the Carolingian idea of bishops’ superiority over society. In particular, a late 9th or early 10th century codex of the library (O.I.4) collects biblical and patristic materials strictly related to this concept, together with copies of Leodoinus’ letters toward bishops and Nonantola’s abbot. Thus, judging on later development, it seems likely the project Leodoinus carried out shaped deeply a local society composite and dynamic such as the one in the west Aemilian territory between 9th and 10th century.
The efforts of abbot Leopardus described as rebuilder and refunder of the church as well as the monastic community are really striking. But how could he be successful? which kind of relations could he use? and how, or on what, he put together the community once again?
The paper will examine the archival documentations of that period in the light of the story narrated by the Catalogum, trying to enucleate the patterns followed by the author (or the authors?) in writing the abbey’s memories. Effectively, a close analysis of the composition shows some contradictions not much stressed before. They seem very useful in order to understand on one side historical facts that took place in that turbulent decades, and on the other which memories the community chose to be at the base of the refoundation of Nonantola’s monastery.
An interesting case of study in Carolingian Italy is the conflict between the aristocratic groups of the Hucpoldings and the Supponids. They competed for a major role at Louis II's royal court, but also in the local context of the Aemilia region.
We possess a really peculiar narration of this conflict. It is included in the Epitome chronicorum Casinensium: a complex text that belongs to the Cassinese tradition, considering the first centuries of the foundation of Montecassino. Nearly at the end of the composition, we read about a tale of cupidity, violence and iniquity that took place at Louis II's court. Main characters are the Count Palatine Hucpold, his wife Andaberta and the Empress Angelberga. Of course product of imagination, we can grant some plausibility when we focus on the inner meaning of this vivid representation. Thus, its dissimilarity in comparison with the Epitome's context and its accuracy on the main characters involved make difficult to qualify it as a complete fantasy of the Epitome's author.
The paper will take into account both level of the tale. It will consider the literary layer paying attention on any topos used, their sources and how and why they had been employed. The second level will consider what can we deduce from this tale, grounding on our knowledge on Louis II's reign and especially on the political situation of these two relevant aristocratic kinships. Coming from the Hucpoldings' point of view, the tale is therefore an outstanding statement of how Hucpold's descendants wanted to represent and remember the first period of their kinship in Italy, when they managed to settle their power.
