With aging, it is important to maintain cognitive and motor functions to ensure autonomy and quality of life. During the acquisition of motor skills, it is necessary for the elderly to understand the purpose of the proposed activities. Physical and mental practice, as well as demonstrations, are strategies used to learn movements. To investigate the influence of mental practice and the observation of movement on motor memory and to understand the relationship between cognitive function and motor performance in the execution of a sequence of digital movements in the elderly. This was a cross-sectional study conducted with 45 young and 45 aged subjects. The instruments used were Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Manual Preference Inventory and a Digital Motor Task (composed of a training of a sequence of movements, an interval and a test phase). The subjects were divided into three subgroups: control, mental practice and observation of movement. The elderly depend more strongly on...

The aim of the present study was to compare the bilateral external work and torque at four stages of an incremental maximal cycling. Eleven cyclists were evaluated on a cycle ergometer. Four stages of the incremental cycling workload were defined as 60, 75, 90 and 100% of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2Max). Pedal forces and kinematics variables were measured through each

The objectives of this study were to: (1) evaluate the resistive torque of an open kinetic chain strength-training machine for performing knee extensions, and (2) perform an analysis estimating internal forces in the tibiofemoral joint. During a fi rst phase of the study, measurements were taken of the machine under analysis (external forces), and then calculations were performed to estimate forces on the lower limb (internal forces). Equations were defi ned to calculate human force (HF), and the moment of muscular force (MMF). Perpendicular muscular force (MFp) and joint force (JFp), axial muscular force (MF") and joint force (JF"), and total muscular force (MF) and joint force (JF) were all calculated. Five knee angles were analyzed (zero, 30, 45, 60, and 90 degrees). A reduction was observed in HF at higher knee angles, while MF and JF also increased at the same time. HF was always lower than the load selected on the machine, which indicates a reduced overload imposed b...

Previous studies suggested that skin stimulation by using medical tape glued to the skin over the Achilles tendon can improve postural control in young adults. Such strategy can be valuable if helping to improve postural control in the elderly. Here, we tested the effects of skin stimulation on the postural control of elderly while standing barefoot. Twenty-two voluntary elderly had postural control assessed under different conditions of skin stimulation. Center of pressure was monitored while they stood quietly barefoot on a force plate during standing with and without medical tape glued to the skin over the Achilles tendon. There were effects of skin stimulation for anteroposterior amplitude of center of pressure displacement, mediolateral amplitude of center of pressure displacement, and area of the ellipse for 95% of center of pressure data (P<.05). These results are promising considering that skin stimulation by using medical tape is feasible even for low incoming subjects and possible to self manage for improvements in postural control.

While walking, one often has to suppress and adjust a planned step in order to avoid a fall. Given that steps are preprogrammed this requires some form of motor inhibition. Motor inhibition is commonly tested in hand function and only recently attempts have been made to evaluate inhibition in the lower limbs, during step initiation. As adequate motor inhibition might play a role in avoiding falls a test to assess response inhibition during walking would be valuable. We developed a task in which subjects walked on a treadmill by stepping on projected patches of light, which could suddenly change color forcing the subjects to avoid it by shortening or lengthening their steps. The difficulty level was manipulated in 4 conditions by changing the distance available to respond. We hypothesized that larger demands on motor inhibition during walking would produce more failures and tested the performance of young adults (n=12) in order to establish the protocol for use in older adults. The f...

It has been suggested that skin stimulation using tape glued to the skin over the Achilles tendon helps to improve postural control. It was recently shown that these effects might emerge only after muscle fatigue and not during non-fatigue standing. Here we tested the influence of skin stimulation on postural control before and after fatigue of ankle plantar flexors. Eighteen subjects stood quietly on a force plate while the center of pressure was monitored before and after fatigue of ankle plantar flexors muscles, with and without medical tape glued to the skin over the Achilles tendon. Our results suggested main effects of tape stimulation before fatigue (P<.05) and significant effect of tape stimulation after fatigue only for amplitude of center of pressure in the anteroposterior direction. The novelty of our study is that most of the center of pressure variables are improved by skin stimulation when the ankle plantar flexors are not fatigued. Therefore the benefits of tape stimulation during fatigue condition are questionable.
