In 2012, Silvia Carraro concluded her PhD in Medieval History at University of Milan. In 2014, her doctoral project, entitled “Tra sacro e quotidiano. Il monachesimo femminile nella laguna di Venezia in epoca medievale (secoli IX-XIV)”, won the “Franca Pieroni Bortolotti Award” promoted by the Società Italiana delle Storiche, which also edited the publication. In 2016, she was post-doc fellow at the University of Verona with a project on diffusion of books in medieval Veneto with the project “ITEM. Cataloghi bibliothecarum Italici medii recentiorisque Aevi” in collaboration with SISMEL (Società Internazionale per lo studio del Medioevo Latino) of Florence. Between 2017 and 2019 she was post-doc fellow at the University of Verona with the project ARSAGI (L’archivio di San Giacomo alla Tomba: un patrimonio da valorizzare). She is member of board of the Societas Veneta per la storia religiosa, and member of the Società italiana delle Storiche. Her research interests follow two main lines of inquiry: a) social and religious life of regulated and non-regulated female communities b) disability studies.

Paying particular attention to the socio-historical reference contexts, the authors identify an ample number of questions and problématiques relating to disabled persons and their inclusion or exclusion in various societies. The volume offers the reader multiple reading keys which are always able to stimulate new questions about the perception of the “other” and about self-representation.

The paper examines the origins and the evolution of recluses’ experiences in the context of Venetian religious life. Analysing the notarial documentation held in Venetian archives has permitted an understanding of their numerical presence, the places where they lived, their social identity and, in part, the forms of life adopted by hermits and recluses, while also aiming to highlight the differences and similarities between male and female experiences. The study also explores the relationships established – especially by women – with local religious institutions and, in particular, with the clergy and the bishop, without neglecting the connections with monastic communities. Finally, the analysis of a large number of last wills and testaments reveals the reactions of Venetians to this singular religious choice and the role played by urban reclusion in the wider context of Venetian religious practice.

On the one hand, by comparing the convent with the other Venetian male and female monasteries, the study clarifies that the community exercised a more or less incisive role in representing first the doge’s family, then the entire city, during a specific timeframe. On the other hand, the analysis reveals to what extent the functions the monastery exercised were influenced by events external to the Dogado or by developments within San Zaccaria itself.

Different types of sources (laws, tales, wills) underline the contradictory behaviours of society, but also of a single man (or woman), towards the disabled person. The most common attitudes are suspicion, fear, exclusion on the one hand, protection, compassion, welcome on the other.

The study begins with the place, the period and the reasons of the convent’s foundation by the Doge. Then it focuses on doge Giustiniano’s will – the earliest record of the existence of San Zac ca ria, which reveals those aspects that San Zaccaria shared with other nunneries outside the Venetian lagoon – and, at the same time, the peculiarities that are at the basis of the unusual relationship between its nuns and the local political power. The development of such a connection during the ages is also examined, with consideration of its political and social implications on both symbolic and material aspects. San Zaccaria preserved the memory of the doges who were buried in the convent and extended the honor of commemoration to all Venetian citizens, which underlines the contribution of monasteries to the reconciliation of rival factions. Our investigation ends with the wider approval of ducal power and its expression through donations of properties to San Zaccaria by worthies from the mainland and diplomats of the emperors.

At the very starting point, it studies the context of Zannino’s imprisonment: when he was captured, how much time he had been in prison and why he was in Cremona. Then, the paper considers recipients of his bequests especially the people who helped him after he was tortured and while he was in jail and it pays great attention to religious features of pro anima bequests and the people who could condition them (friars and priests who gave comfort to the prisoners). Moreover, the will reveals some details about Zannino’s daily life in prison such as his clothes, his food and his gambling activities. In conclusion, the essay studies his family records, especially his mother’s will, that allows us to understand why Zannino’s will is conserved in the Bergamo archive.

The aim of this work is to show how the perception of a disabled performer depends both on the consideration of disability in a particular historical period and on the narration in which we see him/her. For that reason, I propose to take for instance two different periods: the beginning of Twentieth century, when disability has been still turned into show and nowadays when some artists translate the illness into dramatic codes. The main hypothesis is that the artistic practices go beyond both stereotypes and available scientific theories, creating further lens for the reading of disability.

However, this observation was mainly true for the male body, as emerges from this contribution’s study of requests for admission to women’s Conservatories, with special attention to those operating in Bologna. Mainly aimed at preserving feminine honour, these institutions only took in healthy girls without physical or psychological malformations and with pleasant appearances, as they were deemed to be more at risk of losing their honour, and more suitable, upon adulthood, for becoming wives, mothers and performing domestic work. An examination of these sources shows an unmistakeable correlation between “external beauty” and assistance which often led women’s Conservatories to exclude disabled girls or those who failed to meet contemporary standards of beauty. Thus, gender roles played an important part on determining access to charitable circuits: while for a man an unhealthy body, unfit to practice a trade, constituted proof of a state of need, for a woman a deformed or even “ugly” body might be reason for her to be denied assistance.
