Questo intervento riguarda la celebre disputa fra il poeta Virgilio e l'Imperatore Augusto, presente nella terza sezione del romanzo "La morte di Virgilio" (1945), a proposito del significato e dell'autonomia della produzione poetica rispetto al potere politico. Il testo brochiano viene riletto sullo sfondo non solo delle problematiche dell'et\ue0 augustea, ma anche dei vissuti esistenziali dell'ebreo viennese nell'epoca dello strapotere del nazionalsocialismo. Precisa inoltre le varie fonti cui lo stesso Broch ha attinto, in particolare i lavori di Carl Gustav Jung e Karoli Ker\ue9nyi, per l'elaborazione di alcune figure archetipiche come la 'fanciulla divina' Plozia o il fanciullo Lisania, o di Hegel e Kierkegaard per la riflessione sui compiti e sui limiti dell'arte. Die Uberlieferung der beiden kurzen Texte ist gut gesichert. Von der Ankundigung (II, 241–46) existiert ein Fahnenabzug mit Benjamins eigenhandigen Korrekturen, den ein Stempel der Druckerei auf den 19. Dezember 1921 datiert. Der Text der Zuschrift hat sich als Manuskript des mit dem Datum 23. November 1923 versehenen Originalbriefes Benjamins an Florens Christian Rang in dessen Nachlas erhalten. Dem Abdruck in den Briefen (2, 373–375) liegt dieses Manuskript zugrunde. Der Druck in den Gesammelten Schriften (IV, 791 f.) folgt dem Erstdruck im Anhang von Rangs Deutscher Bauhutte, der gegenuber dem Briefmanuskript keine Abweichungen aufweist.

Questo intervento disegna anzitutto lo sfondo in cui, nei primi decenni del Novecento, si e collocata l’esperienza di artisti e studiosi d’avanguardia di varia estrazione nell’enclave ticinese di Ascona e in particolare nel sito prediletto di Monte Verita, in un clima colmo di ansie palingenetiche e di repulsa della civilta, muovendosi tra la progettazione di un’utopia radicale e la restaurazione di un rapporto integrale con la natura. Si mettono poi a fuoco alcuni momenti della vicenda esistenziale di due figure particolarmente rappresentative di questo contesto, come lo zurighese Hugo Ball e il berlinese Erich Muhsam, nutritisi – per vie diverse e parallele dell’entusiasmo per il pensiero dell’anarchico Michail Bakunin, che per alcuni anni aveva operato poco lontano da Monte Verita, mobilitando grandi ideali e alimentando grandi attese di rinnovamento culturale e politico. This paper primarely investigates the background of the first decades of the 20th century, when the experience of the Avantgarde by artists and researchers from different social extraction took place. That unfolded in the Ticinese enclave of Ascona, particularly in the favourite site of Monte Verità, in an atmosphere loaded with palingenetic anxieties and the rejection of civilization, arousing between the project of a radical utopia and the restoration of a total relation with nature. The paper subsequently reconstructs the cultural-historical milieu by focusing on some moments in the life experiences of two representative artists/ authors, the Zuricher Hugo Ball, and the Berliner Erich Mühsam. Both of them, who were influenced by Bakunin’s anarchical thought, worked some years near Monte Verità. Starting form creative temperaments of the Bohème and the Dada, Ball and Mühsam tied up their lives with projects and expectations drove them to carry unequivocally out a renewal of the artistic production. Their artistic and political commitment lead them to measure themselves with a void, that still seems to leave its presence on the Modernity and the present time, i.e. the loss of ideals and meanings.
