A particular case refers to a multitude of buildings, isolated or aggregated, that sprinkle our territory that do not stand out for their valuable architectural characteristics abandoned for different reasons and turned to ruins. This building category retains a valuable judgment when the typological constructive characteristics are recognized as explanations of “making architecture”, strongly linked to a place and to a time and that are worth preserving. The study of a ruin as a building typology involves various issues starting from the survey, both in terms of structure stability and room accessibility, and in terms of survey techniques to be used to acquire geometries that have lost their original conformation. The loss and deformation of the shape are therefore the main obstacles in the reconstruction of the historical evolutionary phases, fu...

The goal of total data integration is now pursued by the BIM processes; their application for the historical buildings involves methodological and technical implications both in the survey field and in the representation, linking the modeling operations to the massive data acquisition. These activities are very complex because of the use of libraries of standardized elements, in conflict with the uniqueness and complexity of the historical form. Two different case studies for eras and construction techniques are analyzed. For both the standardization process of the building process is evident, such as the presence of serial elements with easily recognizable geometries, handcrafted in the first case, industrially in the second. The analysis of architecture, carried out by means of analogical instruments proper of the tradition of drawing, today finds a fruitful experimentation field in digital space and a privileged place for studying and validating the geometrical properties of architectural shape. The experimented methodology faces the problem of reading architectural surfaces through the control of the respective geometrical properties in the field of continuous tridimensional representation in digital space. The object of the experimentation is the covering of the pavilion designed by Maurizio Sacripanti for the Universal Exposition of Osaka in 1970. It is an emblematic case because of the different interpretations to which the drawings of the ‘cape’ are susceptible. Moreover, the interest for ...

One of the first experiments completed by this research group was conducted on the Augustus Bridge at Narni: an integrated digital survey followed by the application of 3D digital modelling. Although only one of its four arches has been preserved, it can still be seen that the bridge was conceived on a large scale of technical complexity based on a precise knowledge that guided the choice of materials and architectonic solutions. The structure is immersed in an enchanting green landscape, which has for centuries attracted numerous scholars and artists. They have left us a precious iconographic heritage whose interpretation is still debated. As far as the geometry and proportions of the construction are concerned, to compare its present state with the original one, the structural ashlars of the bridge were modelled parametrically on the b...

Through the experimentation on a case study conditioned by pre-existences, the authors exploit the potential offered by BIM software to contain standardized and rewritable information through the management of the temporal phases. Starting from the discontinuous model, ideal geometries are defined using a continuous mathematical language. These geometries are gradually adapted to the case study by consecutive steps of modification. The different phases of the modeling are recorded in the database, favoring the transparency of the process. HBIM thus becomes an instrument not only of modeling and documentation, but also of analysis and interpretation of the architectural complexity of the historical built heritage.

In addition to a system of fortresses, towers positioned on the shore of the beaches and watch towers placed on the mountain, the presence of some fortified churches from the eleventh century until the sixteenth century is very unusual: the church of San Niccolò in San Piero in Campo, the church of Sant’Ilario, the church of San Niccolò in Poggio, and of the church of Saints Martyrs Giacomo and Quirico in Rio nell’Elba. Main tasks of the research are: study of the transformations of the churches of San Niccolò in San Piero in Campo and of the church of Sa...

This meticulous integrated survey used advanced laser scanning techniques and digital photogrammetry to provide a historical and critical interpretation of the church based on metrological and proportional analyses and also on a comparison between the architectural orders of the internal nave and façade and the Regola.
