The autopsy of the two finds, the typological analysis of the supports and the revision of the texts led to a re-examination of the archaeological context of discovery in the ager Saenensis as well as new hypotheses on the commissioners and the purpose of the two inscriptions.

Quinctius Flamininus, placed along the road conventionally called via Quinctia, which connected Fiesole to Pisa. The first one, considered lost, was found in Florence at the collection Antinori, where it was possible to carry out the autopsy, which let to solve some doubts about the number of miles. The second one had been relegated in the Corpus among the false inscriptions, but a closer analysis of fontes confirmed that the document was authentic. They are thus two different milestones located respectively 40 and 32 miles from Pisa along an important Republican road that connected the via Cassia.

Ancient sources offer evidence of a typical case of rethinking historical facts concerning the Gracchan age. Despite the fragmentary annalistic tradition of the 2nd and 1st centuries BCE, there are other almost-contemporary non-historiographical sources concerning the political crisis during the late-Republican period that testify to this process, such as Lucius Accius’ tragedies and Cicero’s works.

The construction of a solid ideology aiming at establishing a clear demarcation between orthodoxy and heterodoxy was the necessary condition to check and neutralise expressions of religious dissent. This phenomenon becomes particularly evident not only when one examines norms and decrees issued by the ecclesiastical hierarchy, but also when considering a series of imperial constitutions directed against heretics and pagans. This contribution emphasises the importance of some aspects of Christian historiography in Late Roman Hispania, paying special attention to the increased number of ecclesiastical documentary sources which modern scholarship has analysed over the past few decades.
