The analysis of Latin inscriptions definitively confirms that specularius and speculariarius were two completely different activities which also required a lot of skills different. On the one hand, therefore, there are the specularii, manufacturers and/or sellers of mirrors, which must have been numerous in the city of Rome, since their collegium is attested, but which are not present at least for now, in inscriptions. On the other hand, however, we have many inscriptions of speculariarii. The term defines both those who manufactured panels in lapis specularis, but also in glass, for windows, and those who provided for their care and maintenance.

The new autopsy of an inscription, engraved on a fragmentary bronze plate and already incorrectly published by Ettore Pais (SI, 632), allowed to recognize a new curator rei publicae, probably of two towns. The great gaps of the text do not allow to know the identity of this man, who was of equestrian rank and held the most important offices in Verona

Two inscribed slabs, one in the Medelhavsmuseet in Stockholm and the other in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, make mention of a T. It is thus possible to follow the various steps, from the raw material to the finished product, and to know the people employed in the processing and their tasks.

As is well known, among the unpublished works of Gaetano Marini there is the first corpus of ancient Christian inscriptions of the whole Roman world. Divided into four volumes, now it is in the Vatican Apostolic Library (cod. Vat. lat. 9071-9074). Here for the first time, with great foresight, Marini has brought together and presented all the ancient Christian instrumentum inscriptum known up to then. In this work I intends to present, as a case study, the section dedicated to the Sigilla, i.e. the anuli signatorii and the signacula ex aere. My choice is motivated by the renewed interest in the study of these inscribed objects, hitherto rather neglected despite their undoubted information potential. The limits of Marini’s sylloge are the characteristic limits of the time in which Marini worked, even if he tried to overcome them in the belief that one of the main tasks of a scholar was to collect as many documents as possible.

Not knowing with certainty the origin of a Latin inscription is one of the main difficulties that the epigraphist encounters in his research. This can lead to serious scientific errors, with the creation of “ghost persons” or the incorrect attribution of an inscription to a place or persons . So we present here as a case study an inscription of a frumentarius, an elite soldier with intelligence duties, who all scholars have always believed to come from Verona. In reality, the geological analysis of the lithotype (Proconnesian marble), never used in Roman Verona for sepulchral monuments in the early Imperial age , and the comparison wi th other very similar stel es from Rome and characteristic not only of the Praetoriani and Vigiles , but also of the Frumentarii, has brought very
interesting results. This inscription is not from Verona but comes from Rome and entered Scipione Maffei's collection through some collecting transfers that are difficult to reconstruct, at least for the moment.

This paper is focused on three unpublished inscriptions, from the territory of ancient Compsa, today Conza della Campania (Avellino). They were engraved on a particular type of tombstone, which Theodor Mommsen first called cupa. The inscriptions are noteworthy for the linguistic
phenomena and for the onomastic aspects, among which is the attestation of the female surname Sabbatis, of Semitic origin and rarely attested outside of Rome and Ostia.

In this paper we study and publish the text of 24 inscribed lead labels found in Altino. The inscriptions refer to the trade of woolen products, so we examine the names of the people involved in the production cycle, the vocabulary and type of goods, the transport modes. We also focus on the meaning of the term vellus / vellera, trying to determine its standard weight and whether it is possible that the bales of wool were used as a packaging for mixed loads.

The paper presents the results of the study of the age at the moment of death on Christian Aquileian inscriptions. Firstly, the wide range of ages represented is striking, while notable are the mortality peaks in the first years of life, a fact that finds comparisons with analyses of child remains found in some Italian necropolises. It should also be noted that 54% of the individuals did not live beyond the age of fifteen and that 75% did not live past the age of thirty. Even the examination of the months in which an individual died or was buried also stimulates further reflections. The months with high peaks are July, August and October: since fevers occur in summer and autumn, with the consequent deaths, are very often linked to malaria, it is perhaps possible to assume that in the 4th-5th century AD in the territory of Aquileia, as well as in other regions of the Roman Empire, less control over the water regime favoured a significant increase in malaria.

The inscriptions are «lapides loquentes», that can transmit not only important informations, but also feelings and emotions, as if they were «alive». I was always deeply affected by the fact that the inscriptions are too often put in a position to no longer be able to communicate their message, and so, they are, in fact or metaphorically, «buried alive».
Many inscriptions have disappeared, buried, already in ancient and late antique times, but there are also examples for the modern and contemporary ages, in the foundations of walls or buildings or in pillars of bridges or they are victim of natural phenomena or war episodes. Even more serious, then, is the fact that many inscriptions are not buried
materially, but are in various ways hidden from the scholar’s view. In this paper I will present three case studies related to inscriptions that mention a sexvir Augustalis, an eques and a fictor pontificum.
