This multi-authored volume explores the 'Celtic' religions in pre-Roman and Roman times. It book brings together new work, from a wide range of disciplinary vantages, on pre-Christian religions in the Celtic-speaking provinces of the Roman Empire. The twenty-six chapters are the work of international experts in the fields of ancient history, archaeology, linguistics, epigraphy and Celtic studies. It is fully illustrated with b&w and colour maps, site plans, photographs and drawings of ancient inscriptions and images of Romano-Celtic gods.
The collection is based on the thirteenth workshop of the F.E.R.C.AN. project (Fontes epigraphici religionum Celticarum antiquarum), which was held from the 17th to the 19th October 2014 in Lampeter, Wales.

The choice to focus the attention on a selection of upland sanctuaries (Monte S. Martino, Monte Summano and Lagole di Calalzo) is due to their geographic similarities, their unequivocally frontier position, which make them cult places shared by different neighbouring peoples, and the availability of the palaeobotany and chemical data. The adoption of a sensory approach for the analysis of the rituals performed in these sanctuaries allowed to increase our understanding of the significance that rituals had for the devotees and brought a new perspective on the epichoric religions of Northern Italy.

The cult probably originated in the Germaniae in the 1st century CE and was widespread in the Western Empire by the army. Men were the most frequent cultores, mainly members of the army, but also civilians. The goddesses, proved to be Celtic by the linguists, were imagined as sisters and had a protective function, as the texts of two inscriptions clearly demonstrate.

Martino) located in cultural transition zones. The analysis showed that the phenomenon of Latinization affects in different ways the various elements which compose the epichoric religious dedications: if the onomastics and the votive formulas might be affected by Latin with more frequency, instead the theonyms have the tendency of keeping themselves the most similar to the original epichoric version.

The author proposes the analysis of a group of mixed inscriptions dedicated to plural divinities ... more The author proposes the analysis of a group of mixed inscriptions dedicated to plural divinities discovered in provincial contexts of the Western Empire in which it is possible to find aspects of linguistic contact between epichoric languages and Latin. The votive inscriptions belong to advanced stages of the Romanisation process and bear a theonymic formula where it is possible to find two types of epichoric endings: one of Indo- European origin in *-bhos and one of Germanic origin in -ims. The use of epichoric endings in the theonymic formulas was probably due to aspects of conservatism of religious nature.

The titulus on the stamp mentions the name of a primipilaris of legio XIIII (Gemina). Few specimina in terracotta are known, and it is still not sure what was their purpouse; in the paper couple of hypothesis are suggested.

The typology of captions identified are three: the ones whose purpose was to recognize the divinity that did not have any specific attribute, the ones that bear an invocation and the production’s one. In the first part the author focuses on a particular production in Rheinzabern, characterized by a decoration with the deities Biviae, Triviae and Quadriviae, in the second part instead the focus is moved on the applique medallions of the Rhône valley that bear all types of captions.
