In a clear and concise manner, this volume introduces the reader to the study of historical geography of the ancient world. Within the context of the Mediterranean, home par excellence of classical civilisations, the author explores the connection between humans and the environment, the appropriation of territory, land and sea communications, modes of resource exploitation, and relationships among peoples, cultures, and economies. The author also describes - through analysis of myths, exploratory travels and knowledge - the perception Greeks and Romans had of Mediterranean regions and, more in general, of the ecumene. Finally, an examination of ancient map representations, the volume addresses models and geographical concepts that helped further understanding of the Earth's surface.

The number of signacula ex aere preserved in various museums of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region is reduced to four specimens. The information collected in the archives of the museums give a glimpse of the previous existence of a very small additional number of signacula, now apparently no longer traceable. Despite the lack of documentation, these objects are revealing to be very interesting. In particular, a a signaculum discovered in the nineteenth century in Castel Porpetto, not far from the Via Annia, allows us to establish a connection between the owner and the activities of bricks production managed by some members of the gens Trosia located in the surrounding area.

""Torquato Taramelli taught at the Istituto Tecnico in Udine from 1866 until 1874. During those years, he dedicated himself to a systematic study of the northeastern Italy. The recent discovery of the diaries regarding the reconnaissances, carried out between 1871 and 1874, provides an extraordinary documentation that allows us to seize, beyond the figure of the geologist, the interests of Taramelli for archaeology and the importance of his research, even from this point of view.""

""Within a distance of a few years, the Lyonese doctor Jacob Spon and the Bolognese count Luigi Ferdinando Marsili travelled along the Dalmatian coast and through the Balkans. In their diaries they recorded elements concerning the physical formation of the places they visited, but also the Greek-Roman antiquities they had seen during their journeys. In their diaries there are many similarities in the description of the Dalmatian and Albanian coasts. An important feature they have in common is the recovery and acknowledgement of the signs of the Roman past. Marsili's diary, of which a previously unpublished extract is now published, shows particular attention to natural phenomena and to the political situation of that period. For this reason the diary is an important historical source through which one can understand the relationships between Venice, the Ottoman Empire and the cities of the Adriatic coast.""

In this brief contribution two previously unpublished grave steles from the museum of Giresun in Pontus are analysed, the first one of which is bilingual, i.e. Latin and Greek, and the other one is in Greek. The first bilingual text is very interesting that the content of each version is culturally quite distinct, surely aimed at the different audiences of the Latin and Greek texts in the bilingual and multicultural environment. Through these two new examples from Giresun it is possible to gain new insights about the Roman eastern Pontus.

This paper constitutes a preliminary introduction to a project concerning the south-western area of Aquileia in antiquity. Through the collection and the study of historical and archaeological documents, historical maps, modern aerial photos and the fulfillment of geomorphological surveys, the evolution of the forms of settlement and land use will be investigated. Historical maps and modern ortophotos in particular can be extremely useful to identify some important elements and factors in order to reconstruct the persistences and changes in the natural and cultural landscape.

The fifth and sixth centuries are era of deep and radical transformations, with the start of processes carried out in the long term that would have ended with the fracture of the not only political unity that had characterized the Mediterranean in the previous centuries. Climate changes, migration of populations, a shift in political relations, adjustment and renovation of urban structures were some of the main phenomena, strictly interconnected one with the other, which contributed to such a result.
The meeting intends to examine these aspects in a unitary geographical context, constituted by the regions of northern Italy and of the Alps, on the basis of the geologic and paleo-botanical data, the literary and epigraphic sources, and of the archaeological documentation. In particular, the focus will be on the phenomena of territory transformation and variations on the urban structures, taking into account both public and private spaces and buildings. Attention will also be centred on the organization of places of worship, on the allochthonous presences and on the forms of coexistence and cultural exchange amongst them and pre-existing groups, and on the re-definition of commercial relations.

Incontro di Studio, Aquileia, 6-8 aprile 2017
Organizzazione a cura di
Maurizio Buora (mbuora@libero.it) e Stefano Magnani (stefano.magnani@uniud.it)
All'incontro prenderanno parte numerosi studiosi, con cinquanta relazioni e poster articolati in sessioni tematiche o a connotazione geografica.
