An explanation is provided for the outcome of complex causes and effects that is illustrated through both a flow diagram and Holling’s adaptive cycle model. In sum, it is suggested that the social, economic and ecological system of the Salento area of southern Apulia was particularly resilient to the crises that affected most of Europe during the first half of the fourteenth century, and that these crises were largely responsible for the adoption of the new later medieval and early modern settlement pattern and land organisation.

One of the earliest excavated monasteries in Italy, the standing polygonal-apsed church was erected between the late 5th and early 6th centuries and was apparetly dedicated to the Saints Cosmas and Damian. Occupation continued within the church into the 11th century, when the site appears to have been under the jurisdiction of the Italo-Greek monastery of S. Nicola di Casole.
The report provides details on the site, the building and its territory, as well as specialist reports on the various finds: worked stone, ceramics, coins, glass, metal slag, faunal and anthropological remains."

The reader is guided through the history of the site and the museum. Of especial note is the discovery of graffiti in the local olive-press that illustrate the defeat of the Ottoman fleet at the battle of Lepanto in 1571.
The museum houses a wealth of local finds, as well as a rare Ottoman iron helmet produced in the foundry at Top Kapi, Istanbul, acquired specifically to enhance interest in the relationships between southern Italy and Asia Minor at the end of the Middle Ages.""
