The first consists of discussing some literary and philosophical thoughts on the epistemological value of science by one of the most famous and celebrated poets in Italian literature, Giacomo Leopardi. The poet firmly believes in the cognitive power of science, capable of revealing false beliefs with the light of reason. However, in his mature reflections, what will radically change will not be the value of scientific activity itself, always admirably accepted, but rather its true salvific force. Leopardi was not a scientist, but he used the scientific culture of his time to critically address the great existential themes of man concerning nature and the universe. He had amply demonstrated a scientific culture since his youthful 'History of Astronomy', which would reappear in many of his other literary works. His deep and meditative reflections on the nature of finite and infinite space and time are a clear and fruitful testimony to this. However, Giacomo writes icastically, reason alone is not enough; it needs imagination. The second concerns a first reconstruction of the influence that the philosophy of Enlightenment had on Leopardi’s thought especially in relation to these topics: atheism, rejection of providentialism and anthropocentrism, the conception of nature, the question of the relationship between human and animal intelligence, the rejection of metaphysics, the importance of scientific knowledge.

The analysis of cognitive faculties and denial of the existence of innate ideas; 2. The criticisms of the concept of absolute authority; 3. The sovereignty and freedom of the individual; 4. Cartesian dualism between soul and body, between thought and matter. 5. The rejection of anthropocentrism led to criticism of providentialism; 6. The relationship between man and animals, and the discussions about the matter of animal language. This new formulation of ideas from the century of Enlightenment is of fundamental importance, and although not all of the hoped-for objectives were achieved – for example, those concerning human rights - their ideal was widely accepted, and those who criticise the existing order today do so in the name of Enlightenment.

As regards this last area, we have concentrated our analysis on two fundamental themes: 1. the distinction between words and terms; 2. the dialectical conception of language that holds together apparently antithetical aspects, such as those of vagueness and semantic uniqueness or beauty and usefulness.

The analysis was conducted with particular reference to argumentative fallacies — that are wide- spread today in information and communication policies — and to the abuse of words, when the speaker uses a word by changing its meaning according to his convenience. These strategies are used to influence people’s behaviour and forge public opinion in ways advantageous to political power systems: identifying and explaining these strategies is one of the crucial tasks of critical thought today.

These devices have been held in great consideration both by ancient rhetoricians (Aristotle, Cicero and Quintilian) and by modern critics (Dumarsais, Barthes and Eco) for their capacity to portray visual experiences through the use of words, so as to make them as perceptible as if they were present before the reader's eyes. The essay compares hypotyposis with other similar rhetorical strategies, for example description (an important moment in which the narratio is suspended and the author describes a place or character), evidentia, and especially ekphrasis-which comes from ekphràzo, meaning "describe, represent", it is used with reference to the description of artworks-which all exercise a significant persuasive function, for they make arguments more tangible and convincing.

Euphemism is a a figure of speech in which an appropriate expression is replaced with words or phrases that have a weaker meaning, so as to soften or conceal its excessive violence or crudeness for the sake of social expediency, or for religious, moral or even political concerns. This figure is based on the evocative power of words which leads people to believe in the representation of reality developed by the orator, even when it is not based on verisimilitude. In this way the description of reality is often misleading and untruthful. To identify and expose these strategies of misleading manipulation is one of the crucial tasks of critical thought today. On it hinges the possibility for citizens to be more than just passive spectators of the spectacle of communication and defenceless targets of propaganda techniques.

A noi interessano, in particolar modo, sguardi e visioni trasversali.

The aim of these texts is to bring together a semiotic methodology, to enunciate the logic of decryption, to highlight some rhetoric of dissimulation and to offer an anthropological overview of secret communication. The resulting material is offered to the scientific community, which often finds itself unarmed in the face of new occurrences of concealment whose traditional patterns are difficult to identify. After a brief account of the current state of research and of the practice of concealment over time, the articles published below are presented.
