The necropolis was delimited to the west by a possible funerary path, oriented NNE/SSW, with an ascertained length of 60 meters. In only two cases, buried individuals were accompanied with Nuragic ceramic vases. To the west of these aligned burials, a line of deeper circular or sub-circular pit burials were established. Several of these pits had a decentralized small ditch at the bottom. The burials of the western line were covered by a stone plate. Buried individuals were lacking any dowry and were mainly represented by male of a young age. Although it is appropriate to await DNA results to propose an informed interpretation of Mont’e Prama’s necropolis, it is evident from the acquired data that the burial’s rationale must have been selective.

Its strategic role as a seaport area, together with the presence of an essential resource such as salt, obtained from the pools behind the sand dunes of the major beaches of the area, are the two key factors that explain the longue durée of the human settlement in this region. Yet to date, very few artifacts from the area can be dated between the eighth and fourth centuries B.C. The site where most of the Early Iron Age materials come from is Su Pallosu, while other elements of material culture related to this phase come from the sites of Sa Rocca Tunda, Monte Benei and Capo Mannu. The poster presents evidence relating to each of these sites.

The long study tradition related to the archaeology of the area has required a thorough review of the available literature. The fieldwork activities have focused on a series of systematic, intensive and extensive landscape surveys. The surveys have been developed prior to, during and following the author’s active participation to the excavation of the Mont’e Prama archaeological site. The data deriving from fieldwork and literature review have been implemented into a Geographical Information System (GIS), while the data elaborations have been used to analyze ancient settlements dynamics of the rural territory related to the city of Tharros. The study analyzes the reasons behind the intense ancient settlement in the area which s...

All'alba dei Giudicati.

Parole chiave · Masullas, tomba a camera, alto Medioevo, vasca intonacata. Abstract · At the beginning of the Giudical period. The tomb and the Early Middle Ages structures of Masullas. Preliminary results · A fortuitous discovery occurred near the Church dedicated to the Beata Vergine delle Grazie, in the village of Masullas (Oristano-Sardinia) revealed the existence of a chamber tomb from the Giudical period (early Middle Ages) which has been investigated by an archaeological excavation. The tomb is characterized by a cruciform basin and rare decorative elements not yet published in Sardinia. Thanks to the C14 method as well as to typological comparisons, the burial is dated between the end of the 9th and early years of the 1th century AD. This represents a rare example of the typological evolution of the barrel-vaulted chamber tombs from massimo.casagrande@beniculturali.it, Segretariato Regionale del MiBACT per la Sar-degna. barbarapnc@gmail.com, Archeologa libera professionista. eminausai@tiscali.it, già Funzionaria Archeologa Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio per la città metropolitana di Cagliari e le province di Oristano e Sud Sardegna.

Past excavations and surveys carried out in the 1980s and recent fieldwork carried out by the Capo Mannu Project since 2011, point to dynamic indigenous communities managing complex processes of production and exchange between the 10th and 8th centuries BC, gradually disappearing – from an archaeological point of view – from the 8th century BC. At that point, new materials indicate the beginning of a new phase, with imports brought to the island from all over the Mediterranean. While still limited in number, these imports attest to the signifi-cance of the Capo Mannu are, Cala Su Pallosu in particular, as a place for trade, possibly linked to the central place of nuraghe S’Uraki, located only several kilometres inland.
