In his recent productions, T. Ostermeier investigates the links between literature and drama with complex, renewed realism to question what insights the works of the past can give us into today’s political and social reality. He always favours the in-betweens which enable him to break through the stifling inflexibility of literal interpretation and initiates a dialogue between the past and the present, the actual and the virtual, what is close at hand and what is distant.
His realism connects the visible surface of reality to its invisible depth – its double. He delves into this spectrality by focusing on the characters’ memory, their ghosts; on their language, hanging between translation and reworking, as their unsaid, repressed words speak loud; on space viewed as space between – thresholds, somewhere/nowhere, passages, pictures of all too present off-stage scenes or of elusive intimacy; on music too, echoing meaning in multiple layers. These ghost-like doubles are T. Ostermeier’s material to rebuild a meaningful present without ignoring its cracks and fault lines.
His productions should be analysed as an autonomous oeuvre which calls on literary works to make sense afresh, to voice the painful, timeless experience of the real and the political hope to rebuild the present. His constantly ‘deterritorialising’ theatre substantiates our ghosts – the flipside of our reality – so that we, spectators, may finally get a grasp on them. T. Ostermeier will not confine theatre and literature to merely interpreting the world, he wants them to dialogue in order to transform it.

Recensions (de mes ouvrages) by Delphine Edy

Abstract :
Drama and literature are connected in ways that to this day remain natural and yet ignored. Its dual nature combining textuality and theatricality is often the source of controversies which need to be laid to rest if one wants to understand what is at stake there. Theatre introduces the stage director as another author and mixes criticism with creation as it forces its practitioners to make choices and create a follow-up work. After examining where these relations stand today from a standpoint both historical and aesthetic, the objective will be to present a precise, relevant method for analysing the essentially mobile and fleeting theatrical productions. Beyond structural, semiotic, narratological, sociological, linguistic and psychoanalytical approaches, it is now necessary to combine the methods used by researchers in literature and those used by researchers in theatre studies. The approach that will be proposed includes the dramaturgical analysis of the hypotext, that of the hypertext and that of stage work. The reflection will have to be inter- and cross-disciplinary so that the passages and relations can be delineated as they work between text and stage to create the purpose of the performance.

"At the Comédie-Française, Enter King Lear — With a Flourish"
Thomas Ostermeier, the director of Berlin’s Schaubühne, comes back to the Comédie-Française in 2022 bringing King Lear into the Repertoire in a new translation by Olivier Cadiot, and his return is illustrating his marked interest in the question of madness in Shakespeare, which he has chosen to multiply in a kaleidoscopic way on the stage.
This masterful play and more broadly Shakespeare’s theatre lend themselves particularly well to an inter- and multi-media approach, both of the Shakespearean text itself and its transfer to the stage. The staging, which combines a new translation, adaptation, the addition of video and live music, creates multi-media layers underlining the initial intermediality at work.
The aim here is to analyze both the issues at stake in this new translation and Thomas Ostermeier’s dramaturgical and scenic choices, which serve a strong aesthetic project that I propose to map out and examine in order to give it its rightful place in an intercultural history of contemporary productions of King Lear.

"Jugend ohne Gott by Thomas Ostermeier: when polyphonic writing questions the reality of our world".
In 2021, Parisian audiences should have discovered Schaubühne director Thomas Ostermeier's production of 'Jugend ohne Gott', a stage adaptation of Ödön von Horváth's famous novel, at the Théâtre des Gémeaux in Sceaux, but the Covid crisis decided otherwise. It premiered at the Salzburg Festival on 28 July 2019 and is part of a vast theatrical project, a tetralogy comprising 'Professor Bernhardi' (2016), 'Return to Reims' (2018), 'Italian Night' (2018) and 'Youth without God'. These four productions confront the rise of far-right ideas in the contemporary political landscape by inquiring about the reasons underlying this development, which leads Ostermeier to question the notions of individual responsibility and courage and to 'excavate reality', just as Horváth did in his time.
The aim of this contribution is to show how Ostermeier's playwriting responds to Horváth's dramatic writing, and how the director invests the interstitial space between text and stage in order to emphasise that the courage to tell the truth belongs as much to the present as to the past - to the book as to the stage - and that it is more urgent than ever to refuse to enter the 'age of the fish'.
In Empire (2016), Milo Rau confronts the European myth with its reality, that of forced migration and exile, by putting four Greek, Romanian, Syrian and Kurdish actors with tragic fates on stage. Empire is in between: between video projections and the actors' on-stage performance, between the actors' personal stories and Greek tragedy. Through reenactment, Milo Rau "creates a disposition to the collective imagination by way of reality" and offers us a theatre between tragedy and documentary.
SOMMAIRE

In A. Ernaux’s steps, É. Louis writes to account for truth, to bear witness for the real. They experience sounds, noises and silences as particularly meaningful signs of the social classes that they live in. Their original, popular environment is made of constant noise, whether coming from inside the body or the surrounding working-place. Later as they rise socially, they realise that more privileged classes live in a filtered, muffled world. But being loud may also be a move toward freedom, an expression of the lived experience. The theatre stage is a particularly apt media for the telling of É.

Louis’s stories as it enables the varied experiences to be heard and felt through their vibrations, and all noises on stage make sense.

Abstract:
The hotly debated performance of Thomas Ostermeier’s stage version of Edouard Louis’s History of Violence points to a confusion concerning the role of the author, the status of the text, of its performance and of the role played by theatre in today’s society. It raises a threefold question: what is the relationship between literature and reality, what defines an author (whether writer or stage director) and what does it mean that contemporary literature should be so intent on self-writing? E. Louis is particularly clear about using fiction to write about truth, but then truth all too often is construed as fact, and therefore as antithetic to fiction. He claims to explore a form of confrontational literature. In T. Ostermeier’s staging he becomes the actor of his own text which only compounds the text’s powerful ambiguities. Together, Louis and Ostermeier create a dynamic recomposition of the political and the intimate.

Abstract :

Abstract :

Abstract:

1. Premier jour : table ronde sur le thème de la traduction du texte de théâtre (traduction de pièces ou de travaux théoriques en lien avec le théâtre) ;
2. Deuxième jour : atelier d’analyse du texte dramatique performatif, sur une pièce à définir encore ;
