Focusing on a ‘competence paradigm’, studies on childhood seek to take children seriously as social agents in their own right and to demonstrate their active participation and competences in the different social contexts they live in. Nevertheless, if children sometimes want to be seen as actively engaged and competent, we will see from the point of view of children living with type 1 diabetes that they do not necessarily express their agency in this one way nor want to be competent in any situation and at any time. In a manner which is not always visible to adults, children might also express their agency through silence, withdrawal and other non-participatory ways.

The feelings of uncertainty and instability generated by these transitions might be heightened by the experience of illness. Through two sociological and anthropological researches carried on body transformations and age transitions between 9 to 14 on the medical and biographical transitions experienced by young people from 12 to 21 living with type 1 diabetes (T1D), we analysed the way the manifestations of the illness combine with the process of growing up. In this article, we describe the social, school, physical and technical transitions which mark out adolescence and the meaning young people with T1D give to them.

In this situation and in the continuity of social representations concerning childhood, children are mainly considered as 'mute bodies' in need of adults' constant monitoring and surveillance. Their participation in their own care is thus reduced to a minimum, since children are seen as incompetent, compliant and passive. From an exploratory study made in France with children aged 6 to 12, living with type 1 diabetes and their parents, children's competences regarding their treatment and its administration were questioned. This article presents some results of this research concerning three types of competences which have been observed in children [...]
