New investigations on the Monte Spaccato road in Trieste, in order to verify its antiquity and Roman matrix. After an analysis of the sources in which it is mentioned, from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age, the focus shifts to the itinerary, its development and the description of the best
preserved section, the one close to the pass of the Karst Plateau. In this last section new elements come to support the Roman origin of the route, which, with a width of the roadway of 14 Roman feet (4.15 m), is fully placed among the viae publicae, probably with purposes related to military
operations in the hinterland. Particular attention has also been paid to the description of the particular drainage system for waste water, which presents characteristics not found in the literature.
