Abstract
The latest excavations at Sura, 25 km west of Raqqa, partially uncovered a thermal building in good state of preservation, of an unusual type. This bath complex, built mainly of baked bricks, leans against the northern corner of the fort, overlooking the Euphrates. In its current state of discovery, its plan displays, from south to north: a cold room, three warm rooms, two hot rooms and a service area for water supply. This discovery brings to knowledge original structures, such as embody the transition from Byzantine baths to proto-Islamic hammam.
Key-words: Sura, Middle Euphrates, Late Antiquity, thermae, hammam, Late Byzantine, Proto-Islamic
