Although he was a leading figure during the troubled decades of the civil wars and the palamite controversy, a definitive study on his life and his works has to be published, excluding dated Gones’ monograph. Moreover, Kallistus’ pastoral activity felt in the years of the Ottoman occupation of Gallipoli and other cities in western Anatolia.
The article aims at providing an overall evaluation on Kallistus’ perception of Islamic matters (Muhammad’s role and preaching, Muslim practises, cases of apostasy). We start from a biographical episode when Kallistus was captured by Turkish pirates. Then, we provide an in-depth analysis of passages from his edited and unedited works (homilies and prayers) in order to draw knowledge and reactions of a key figure in the byzantine religious and intellectual milieu in front of the Turkish (and Islamic) threat.

Meyendorff. Anonymous letters are preserved without references to the addresses. An in-depth analysis of the subject and the lexical and stylistic characters point to attribuiting these letters to Joseph Kalothetos, a loyal supporter of Gregory Palamas during the Palamite controversy. The problematic identification of the addresses and the circumstances of composition are also a topic of discussion.

In this article, we publish the edition with Italian translation of Contra Apostatem of Niketas M... more In this article, we publish the edition with Italian translation of Contra Apostatem of Niketas Myrsiniotes, metropolitan of Rhodes in 15th Century. The autograph of the text is preserved in Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Par. gr. 1276 (ff. 208r-215v), where we read the polemical writing as anonymous. Our attribution to Niketas makes clear the identity of until today anonymous copyist of this and other manuscripts.
The text is characterized by an original intertwining of controversial topics raised by byzantine and western tradition, as we demonstrate in the commentary, which foreruns the edition.
Moreover, we offer other texts concerning the Islamic presence in the Rhodes’ region preserved in Wien, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Vind. hist. gr. 91 (a letter of Nilus, metropolitan of the island, and some interesting marginalia).

In order to discuss the problems connected to this text, we have split the article in two parts. In the first, we show the structure of the homily that contains a quotation from the Acts of the second Photian council (879-880). After having reconstructed the process of formation and transmission of this collection in an abrégé version in 13th-14th Century, we have observed how Kallistus’ text runs parallel to a long section from the anonymous De origine schismatis III and the Neilos Kabasilas’ De synodo Photiana, probably his sources. In the second part, we have tried to draw the framework of the use of historical argumentations – and more in detail the second Photian council’s Acta – in the antilatin polemistic literature in the middle of 14th Century (Neilos Diasorenos, Athanasius of Pantokrator, Neilos Kabasilas and Demetrius Kydones for the Greeks, Filippo Bindo de Incontris for the latin party). So, we have proved a change of perception of these texts in the debate against the Latins. Moreover, Kallistus, for the first time in this period, lends a new dimension to these sources because he employs them in the homiletic genre.

We analyze two short texts inserted in the Capita theologica et pratica et gnostica of Symeon and by a study on manuscripts tradition and Philokalia we note a familiarity with the life of the saint written by Nicetas, assuming that our texts are a survival from the lost Vita in extenso.

The analysis of these texts leads us to reconsider our understanding of the movement about the Symeon the New Theologian’s poetical fatigue. First of all we have to imagine that the hymns circulated among a small circle of disciples, seculars and consecrated, already during the life of the saint. Secondly on the basis of information drawn from praefatio and the Scholia and Enkomia, accompanying the edition prepared by Niketas, we believe he can not be considered solely responsible for the collection, but has participated in the work of editing a group of Niketas acquaintances. Only in the light of this condition it’s indeed possible to explain both the spread of the text between contemporaries and the interpretation and use, open to various outcomes, at the next generation.

For Byzantium the relationship and the cohabitation with the Islamic-Turkish world are inexorable... more For Byzantium the relationship and the cohabitation with the Islamic-Turkish world are inexorable necessity to know and to understand the last centuries of the Greek Empire. Nevertheless at the beginning of 14 th Century the process of formation of Turkish emirates in the Western lands of Asia Minor meant an absolute novelty for the political and religious scene of Byzantium. Necessary and constant exchanges, the aggressive policy of the numerous emirates, the need to rely on them to work out the institutional muddle of the civil wars have been reasons of acceleration of the phenomenon which have finally led to the end of the Empire. Obviously other elements – seemingly unrelated – have contributed: the convulsive development of the palamitic debate, the social changes and the troubled relationship with the Latin World are only the main factors. To be interested to the perception of the Turkish danger is a necessary engagement to fully understand the 14 th Century. We must consider that the main figures who debated about the Islamic-Turkish matters are the same who played an important role in the religious and political life at that time (John VI Cantacuzenus, Gregory Palamas, Callistus I patriarch). But there are some other factors for the urgency of the study we offer. First of all the renewed interest that it finds in the scientific literature. Then we have to consider the lack of comprehensive studies available on the matter. The Khoury's works, for now the summa for everyone who likes to approach the byzantine antislamic controversy, don't deal with 14 th Century authors or writings. The convergence of these three elements (relevance of the matter, renewed interest and lack of comprehensive studies) have persuaded us to take up this matter. Our work is divided into five parts: the presentation of four dossiers and a conclusion that revalues and upgrades the materials we gathered. Indeed other sources have allowed us to enlarge the objective of our observations. So we have been able to define a significant overview. First of all we have selected four areas of research according to the importance and dimension of the available works. So we have focused our attention on authors and documents relating to the middle of 14 th Century: documents from the archives of the

It also searches into possible interactions of the union debate with the Hesychast controversy as well as into the issue of the authenticity of the texts appealed by the Greek and the Latin delegations in the Council of Florence.
